That's mainly what mine is for. I don't usually need it for most of the year when I do most of the work with a golok. Winter is usually very damp here so an ax and saw come into play. I prefer little Indian fires about 1' across not those darn great white-man-warm-the-village things. Whilst there are other methods of getting some good size bits of wood going in those constraints saw and ax are by far the easiest. I know you can burn wood through and use star fires and so on but that is at best shoddy and messy.
Splitting cut wood for dry stuff in the middle ... yep, I dont have much experience with snow and ice, a whole different ball game.
I have to own up to something ... lately I've been taking a small chainsaw and clearing fire trails, getting firewood at same time ... these saws look better every time I look at this thread.
