Have you looked at the Glock entrenching tool. Basically folding shovel with a handle made out of the same polymer they use for the handgun frames. I have one and it seems like it'll hold up real well. I haven't had a chance to really ring it out yet but hope to this weekend in the yard. It does have a really nice saw hidden in the handle.

+1 on the Glock shovel I have had mine for around 10 years and boy is it still going strong! This thing gets some major use every year during camping season. It's capable of digging a good hole. One of the other reasons I like is is because of the many angles the head can be locked into, and when using it as a pick/hoe unlike the NATO style shovels you have a completely straight handle to hold onto; yet still compacts nicely. The steel that the blade is made out of is some good stuff too as it has been heated up many times as it gets used for fire pit duty adjusting logs and moving around coals for cooking. Now as far as the saw in the handle goes don't expect to do any serious cutting with it but that's not its intent. It is described as a root saw which it does work well for if you clear out from around/under the root and put the saw under it and saw upwards.
