For my Busse friends I have a few pictures and comments about folding utility knives. In my occupation I use a razor knife a lot and I need one that holds up. I am a Sebenza guy but my large regular was not cutting it. Not only does the knife need to be strong but the razor blades need to be tough and sharp. I ordered just about all the razor knives Amazon carried that I thought looked decent. I also tried a few different types of razor blades. The bi-metal types were okay but nothing compared to the Stanley Extra Heavy Duty (EHD) blades.
Stanley EHD blades:

Lowes Kobalt – The best one out of the bunch, strong lock back, no play, holds EHD blades with a little persuasion:

Sheffield – Same as the Kobalt but the quality seems to be less:

Irwin – Junk, does not hold EHD blades and everything about it feels loose and cheap:

Sheffield and Bessey Premium – Much heavier than the standard and better lock up, holds EHD blades:

CAT – Linerlock, secure lock up but you know it won’t last long, does not hold EHD blades:

Superknife – JUNK JUNK JUNK. Cool design that holds EHD blades but the entire knife feels like it is made of plastic and the blade holder does not work well letting the blade move up and down extensively:

Snap On – Very nice knife but large and no pocket clip. Works well and holds extra blades that autoload, no EHD blades:

Bessey – The most solid lock in the group with extra blades held in the handle, holds EHD blades but the design is a little awkward:

Wiss – JUNK:

Summary – I hope this helps someone and if anyone knows a better alternative I would love to hear about it. Thanks everyone.

i've thought of getting a couple of the kobalt ones. i work at lowe's, and from time to time they offer those 2 for 1. one of these days.

I use these kinds of knives for cutting leather; the thin blade makes for easy work. I have that Kobalt one and it works great but the thin handle profile wears on the hands when cutting 10+ oz. leather. It helps me to turn the handle away from myself and push the cut away rather than pulling it towards me. I have a no-name non-folding utility knife with a more round handle that works like a champ and I use it most of the time.

Good topic. Here's the utility knife I keep in my toolbox:

The body and lock feel very sturdy. The body is aluminum so it's actually very light. The blade holder has a fair bit of give where the razor actually sits. I can hold the razor and move it around in it's housing quite easily.

It was a freebie though; a couple years ago my sister's loser boyfriend showed up at the house with it and I didn't like the idea of this particular dude having a knife so I took it from him. He wasn't happy about it but the outcome suited me just fine!

Funny, I've got an original Superknife and I like it. Agree their quick-change blade changer made it seem "dangerous" to use to me. Never tested the durability of the blade locking mechanism, but I didn't want to test it. It was the smallest alternative IIRC.

I've used the HD version of the top-lock blade ones. Bulky for EDC to me.

I use and carry a Superknife 2 at all times. As far as I'm concerned, nothing on the market is better for a folding utility. I have used and destroyed everything I get my hands on and these have outlasted them all.

Thanks for the help guys. I know the fixed ones are superior but I don't carry a toolbox around with me in the field:(

As for the superknife I don't know what to say other than this example is junk that I would trust less then my slipjoints. It feels like plastic and when the blade moves up and down so does the blade lock:confused:

Thanks again:)

Any of the Superknife line other than the 2 is crap. I'd rather use duct tape as a handle.

The blades in those retractable utility knives snap apart way too easily for my liking. I can be quite abusive with the folder and everything works out alright.
