OK - you guys really helped me yesterday in my thread about "spacer materials". Later today I am going to order some G10 and following sage advice forget about oil can plastic etc.

But now I have a new question. I asked about spacers but several guys used the term "liners". Are they the same thing? Different? I want to order the right stuff to layer between steel and wood all epoxied together like a sandwich. Maybe 1/16th to 1/8th" thick depending on the knife handle thickness I want to end up with.

Sorry about dragging this all out but I don't want to get the wrong stuff.

Thanks

Steve

They are the same things as far as I know. I epoxy the liner to my scales and the finish the front. Then epoxy them on the knife. They give a knife a look that just says "custom". The G10 is the best but seems that some colors are limited. I found a pack of 10 colors for $10 of some fiber liner material. It's not as good as g10 but it's made for knives. I've used some and it worked ok. It just doesn't finish as nice.

Fiddleback forge once said he only uses superglue for liner to scale, it's faster and he said he has never had a problem with it.

Do not use fiber liner. Fiddleback has also said that it absorbs moisture and moves. Stick to g10. It's the way to go. 👍

It's the same material different usage.
Liner=between scale and tang
Spacer= between bolster and scale or pommel and scale etc...

I think with the fiber liner material you just have to be careful about what adhesive you use. I use a runny, slow cure epoxy (Bronwells) that soaks into the fibers making it basically into a micarta. The liner material is completely saturated with epoxy and when it hardens it's like glass, but bonded to the blade and other handle material. I'd never hesitate to use it.
