Followup: What is a custom knife

No, it was completely pointless. You now know no more than you knew before. Except that there are a bunch of great guys hanging out here who know more than you do.

Todd Begg, RJ Martin, Rick Hinderer and probably many more than I am aware of, have brisk sales with LOTS of CNC. They make no bones about it.

Add Jens Anso, Tim Galyean, and Gus Cecchini to that list. On the other hand, Jerry Busse uses a ton of CNC in his production line and no one considers those to be "custom" knives. The specific tools used by the maker have little to nothing to do with what constitutes custom work.

I appreciate your condescension, and the accuracy of your statement ;)

Heh. I keep seeing Betzner down there at the bottom of the page, and I can't help but wonder what Buster would have to say about all this.

No, that's OK. I don't need to wonder.

It's a thorny issue, and one that will never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. By your definition above, Coop, a Randall is a custom knife, and I don't think very many people would go there.

by your guide neither is a Loveless knife. To me only those made to the customer order are custom, but both makers make handmade knives

AG, you have fought this battle for many, many years. I respect you for that. I'm a relative newcomer compared to you, but I can still see that this discussion will never accomplish anything. Sure, it's fun, as long as we can keep it civil. But it's going to end up in the same place it always ends up.

That is true. You miss my point though, the Randall is as handmade, or custom, if you will, as the Loveless knife.

No, my friend, here's my point: This battle has already been fought, and it can't be won. If you want to shoot the shit, sure, why not? I'm game. But it's going nowhere.

Call me if you want. You have my number through Facebook. I'll talk all day. But we'll still end up right where we started.
