Fondling your knives

Obviously, we're all passionate about our knives. We study them, make them, talk about them and have at least one of them on us all of the time. So, when we're sitting around visiting family or coworkers, is it acceptable and polite to pull a knife out and love on it, study it, open and close it?

I find myself not actually using my knives much during the day, but just pulling them out and looking at (appreciating) them. After all, I put a fair amount of energy into the "hobby." Shouldn't I enjoy what I'm carrying.

I sometimes feel uncomfortable doing this and there are two scenarios. Occasionally, it's like Barney Fife admiring his new wristwatch. Other times, it's the "I'm gonna' scare the sheeple" syndrome. How about you?

depends. In my home, yes. At work, no, but I do use a box cutter at work and that gets spun constantly from grip to grip.

Yah, sometimes while I'm sitting in my office, I pull my REKAT Sifu from my pocket and take it out for a spin, but oddly-enough, I haven't yet carved my name into the top of my desk...YET.:D.:D.

Yup. Most of my fondling is time on the phone, time in the car waiting for my wife, time in the men's room (hey, I'm just big enough to admit it!), and hanging out with family.

The old adage "you shouldn't whip it out in front of strangers" definitely applies.

We are still talking knives.

KNIFESTURBATING!!!! LMAO!:D
Does this mean micarta grows on your palms?

Well, It appears that I will eventually go blind:D. I have three knives sitting on my desk at this moment, and when not typing, I have one in my hand. At home, it's a little harder to satisfy my needs, as the wife takes offense at my self pleasuring.

You don't truly have a social problem until you hide a copy of Blade under your mattress.

Believe it or not I have a ritual before I go to bed every night where I go to my Gerstner, open every drawer and play with knives for 5 - 30 minutes at the end of which I pick the candidate that will get carried the next day.

a knifesturbating orgy of sorts :)

To stay on track though, when I'm at home I always have a knife near by to play with while watching tv with my wife or working at the computer. I also play with whatever I'm carrying throughout the day when I'm alone in my office.

What if it's not under your matress but the pages stick together :D

Sorry, that was totally uncalled for :(

For those who aren't always on the "up and up" with the spouse on your latest purchase, try fondling the new knife in front of them and see if they notice. Dangerous game, but... (Modern version of mumbledy-peg? :))

Don't fondle your knife at work whilst in "the stall" and drop it; You never know who might be sitting in the stall next to you.

Don't fondle your knife while in the car, at least while moving. It could cause serious injury if you happened to get in an accident, which would be more likely since you're concentrating on playing with the knife rather than driving...

I am not ashamed to admit that, yes, I too am a knifesturbator. I do it a lot. It's especially fun when you have group knifesturbation sessions in which you get to fondle all your buddies' holey Mayo's, curvy Ralphs, and big Carsons. There's even knifesturbation going on in public places like gun shows and (ahem) Blade Show. Used to in the days of slow dial-up Internet accounts, I used to flick knives to pass the time waiting for a page to download. But with cable modems, I hardly have a chance to pick up my knife while surfing. As ParaGlock pointed out, sometimes I "do it" while in "the stall"...it's always more fun with the big folders that go "ker-CHUNK!!" when the blades lock up....

:D :D LMAO!!

I was just confronted with this dilemna today. I was at work and just felt like taking my knife out and just cycling it a few times. Then I thought twice. The girls in my office are rather squeamish, and they just wouldn't "get it" I fear. I am lucky enough to have my own office though, so I would be able to get it out of sight quickly if I heard someone coming, so I got my knife out of my pocket and played with it long enough to enjoy the sound of a few "click-clicks" before putting it back in my pocket. It's a shame really. I wish we lived in a society that didn't fear knives. And I wish I didn't feel like I have to keep it out of sight all the time. Bums me out.

Postscript:
I proudly hung my "Blade" magazine 2002 calendar on my office wall today. I thought the manager was going to faint after I saw her turn white as a sheet! She's got a calendar with puppies on it! Awww, how cute! Can't wait till she sees the picture for March! :D

Edited to add postscript.

It all depends on your surroundings and mental stability of those around you.

For example, if you're in a "Bank". . .it's not a good idea to whip out your blade and love on it."

And if you're in the company of the "mentally unstable" (aka non-knife knuts) it's not "politically correct" to yank the blade out, study it closely as you deploy and retract the blade !

I too have a weakness when it comes to knives when I'm "aware of my surroundings and mental stability of those around me." While it's not "knifesturbating". . .it's a more refined form of the disease.

It's called "pocket fondling." Yes, the dreaded disease of lightly caressing, touching and stroking a knife while it's laying loosely in the front pocket of your pants.

Oh. . .the silky feel of the scales. The smoothness of the satin finish. . . And the softened edges. . .

Of course. . .ya have to be extremely carefull when your "pocket fondling" a auto (especially a OTF) !

The hard part (besides the knife) is masking the strained emotions on your face ! :D

Weird. . .always have the urge of grabbing a smoke after a "pocket fondling" session.

I'll sit watching tv and i'll be coon fingering my new knife get'n the feel of it using just the left hand only for opening and closing then switching to the right hand only doing it over again. In public i'll refrain from snapping the blade open I use the old pull the blade with the weak hand trick slowly locking the blade into use.

I do like to take my knives out often just to caress and look at. I do not do this in the company of others, unless they are also knife knuts. The average person would probably consider you to be crazy and some would scream and run away. I just don't figure it is worth the aggravation.

Edited because of poor spelling.

Oh, most definitely. In fact, my dad told me to stop doing it around the family - "threatening" or something. I often flick my M16 around, and my Chive before it died. I'm getting a balisong soon.......:D

*wipes the tears from her eyes* OMG, this whole conversation's cracking me up. ANd yes, I too have been guilty of fondling my own knife when in private (hey, women aren't immune). At work, no, only just let a few of my more open minded coworkers see it, around family, no though I take every opportunity to cut things. :) Gotta be careful about the habit, wasn't paying enough attention while knifesturbating and surfing the web and got bit.
Guys, you really knifesturbate in the stall?!?! I'd think you'd want to be more careful when there's something else of importance that is unprotected and vulnerable...
