Food Condoms

Condiments somehow just sounded too pedestrian. Anyway, I tend to have a real issue with sauces, dressings, gravy, hot sauce, steak sauce or anything else that I can dip something into. The hinges on the door of the frig are actually warped from the weight of all the crap I have.

Sadly, this addiction has transferred over to what I take out with me when I go camping. Realizing that I can't very well drag a 50 gallon cooler full of stuff I have so I have condensed with the use of those handy size condiments. Anyone else afflicted with this disorder and what do you take out with you on a camp out?

Here are some shots of what usually goes with me. I'm seriously freaked out that I'll be out there and want something and not have it.

Let's see what you got!

Well, you know what salt 'n pepper look like... ;)

and when I sometimes want to eat really fancy I bring along some herbs. I mix everything together in the little black containers of photographic film before I leave.

May I ask for how many days you go camping when you take all that with you?

How many people are you cooking for with all that? Try planning your meals ahead of time so that you only have to take a few basic ingredients, that's what I was taught to do when I was younger.

Last time we went out we were gone for a week. I tend to go for overkill though so I doubt anyone would need that much. I keep one of those rubbermaid tubs that have all the staples (packets included) with some herbs, salt, pepper and camp pans and stuff. It's usually ready to go and I just add perishables before I go.

I love those little black 35 mil film can canisters. They are sure getting hard to come by.

I carry a small container of "FatCat's 56", which is spicy seasoned salt. That, and small bottles of Olive Oil and my Mango Hot Sauce, are the extent of my condiment selection.

I usually only carry some ramen, oats, and beef jerky. I do take stuff to obtain food, if I get lost. And when I am hiking I almost always have a gun, unless in a park. (Since I mostly go in areas that hunting is legal, so I go hiking, with a secondary intent on hunting) If I got lost out there, I'd be more concerned about water. (Which is why I have a couple of ways to purify it with me)

Never bad to be over-prepared though. ;)

Even better is the GSI brand has some really cool spice containers. Not just a salt and pepper shaker, but a modular system that allows you to bring many herbs and spices on a trip. I like to eat tasty food in the outdoors but I've never been a fan of condiments. Or maybe I do appreciate them, but for health reasons I try to avoid food that uses them. I'm not eating a pastrami without mustard or a hotdog without whatever, but I try to avoid those foods.

I always take some little packets of salt like you get at mcdonalds and I carry the smallest bottle Tabasco makes, I always want it for something :D

I've typically pre cooked and then frozen stuff for short 1-2 knight pack trips. For car camping, you can prep everything ahead of time. Now for week+ pack trips it becomes more tricky. I try to bring stuff that serves multiple uses and I bring what I need. I don't really like the deyhdrated food pouches much and have never used them, but that works for lots of folks.

It would be great if someone knew of a website that carries dehydrated food in bulk at good prices. Well...they sort of too. Pinto beans, dried pastas, rice, can be readily found in most stores at a good price. Now Minestrone soup can be bought in a can, but could it be bought dehydrated in bulk somewhere? That would be great.

Check your soup aisle. They have dehydrated soups on the upper shelf usually. My girlfriend and I had some great minestrone our last camping trip and used toasted french rolls to sop up the broth. And I never sop up broth it was that good. Can't remember the brand though.

Who sells powdered sour cream and is it worth buying? I have a hankering for campfire fajitas and hate the idea of carrying a tub of the stuff.

I might have to try that. Fajitas sound good. I don't use sour cream though.
