food for an overnighter

Hi RR her are some ideas about what you can make with a good dehydrator.
As Chris said before you can buy many things in the store that you can use on a trip. Just spend sometime walking around. If you have an asian store in the area they are a treasure trove for backpacking food. Ask your wife or GF to go with you they might have alot of ideas for combinations of food. If you make soups some sea weed would go great in it and its good for you.

RR,
Sasha pretty much has you covered, do a google on dehydrator recipes and you will get tons of info. Basically I can eat like a king and carry a 3rd of the weight without paying the high price of commercially prepared backpacking food. Chris

I like quick and easy. Oatmeal for breakfast, chicken or tuna pouch and crackers for lunch, stew, chili or hot dogs fr dinner. Clif bars, jerky and trail mix snacks.

Seriously man, where's the booze? Any serious overnighter demands half a bottle of Auchentoshan per person, and a Cohiba each.

Cooking food in a vacuum sealed bag submersed in hot water is actually a proper technique used in many top end restaurants. The technique is called 'sous vide', and was first developed in the 3 Michelin starred Restaurant Troigros, in Roanne, France, back in the 70's. It's done at lower temperatures than boiling, for longer periods of time. Interesting that you gentlemen know that one, seems we've got some real gourmands running around in the woods these days!

I bring along instant mashed potato pellets, use a little bit to thicken up stews and gravies, saves me having to dink around with roux and flour paste.

Booze who needs that, yacks..... As someone that dont drink (never liked the taste). I wash down everything with hot chocolate warms up the body for a cold night too lol. All said and done a good tasty meal and a good night sleep is most important for me. Nothing else would keep you walking the next day. I know i mentioned it before but very few things would beat a bagel with some cheese and sausage. You can also add some dried fruits. This way you got everything your body needs for a long hard walk. Its amazing what you can cook out in the woods or at home if you are willing to try new combinations of food.

What about a hunk of summer sausage? Heck, on short one nighters with my son(5) where we only went in about 2 miles. I have brought a couple cans of chunky soup.
