I was at a shop today ordering a new part for my scroll saw and happened to look ove at a shelf of spraycan products and this jumped out at me.

It is put out by Sherwin Williams. It is a Sprayon™ brand.
On the front of the can it has 210 Food Grade Silicone Lube.
5% Silicone formula,USDA H-1 Rate,Contains no CFC's
What appears to be a part number on the back is 00210.
It is listed as being used for Slides,Guides,Knives,Slicers,Saws,Mixers,Food anddrug processing equipement.
It is effective from -40* to +450* F.Repels water and is non-corrosive to metals.

I bought a can.The olive oil Ihave been using works really, really well, but it has started to get gummy and causing the blades to be hard to get loose from the scabbards.
The silicone freed 'em right up.

Yvsa, you continue to surprise me. The only silicone I would have thought interested you...

So it's peanut oil vs. edible silicone lube then...

Are we still talking about khukuris?

Thanks for the tip Yvsa. It will be good to revisit this topic after a few months to see if there are any negative effects.

I liked vegetable oil too, for a few months.

Howard, do you mean negative effects like with the implants?

Howard, I have finally taken the time to look at your FAQ and you have done a great job!

Who needs a book anyway? You get everything free at Howard's page.

Again, great work, Howard, and many thanks. Your effort will be a lot of help to many people both here and in Nepal.

Thanks guys.
I would have continued using the olive oil except for the stickyness in the scabbards. It was almost if they had been implanted there.

I really like the coating that stays on like the olive oil does.It dries nicely and I may have just used to much in the scabbard.

I agree with the wait and see Howard.
I have used the dry type of silicone for sometime and have always had good luck with it.
And then rust never has been much of a problem for me here in Oklahoma.
It would be interesting to have someone in a much worse climate try this stuff out.
I wonder if it could be shipped via the USPS?
If it could be I would be willing to donate a can to someone who has problems or lives in worse conditions.
What about some of you guys in the Pacific Northwest??

Oh,Rusty remind me to tell you about ......

Yvsa,

If you want to send some of the silicon spray up this way I'll give it a try. I've been using a silicon oil from AG Russell, and it hasn't given me any problems. But I'm not as good as I should be about putting it on the blades after use. Spray on may be a more convenient way of applying it.

If you can ship the stuff let me know the price of the bottle and shipping.

By the way, the climate up here isn't worse. It's just different. You need a remedial course in Political Correctness. We consider ourselves soggy and luminosity challenged.

Khukuri FAQ

What's wrong with using the regular silicone spray lubricant that you can buy at any hardware or automotive store?

:
Steven I think any lube or protectant is as good as any other if it does the job intended.
I saw the food grade silicon and would prefer that over the other in case I wanted to prepare food with my knife.
I have used the other silicone with good results too.
Some are concerned about any lubes imparting something potentialy harmful to our bodies via being used on a knife blade. The other concern is the taste imparted by residue on blade. Most petroluem products taste really bad in my experience.

I got around to calling the PO today. Now they have also went to one of those 800 numbers for information. If you hit No.2 you get to talk with a real person.

The dude there said there wasn't any restrictions on sending spray paint so he guessed the Silicon Lube would be alright too.hehehehe.

When I go to send everyones things out I will get this off too.
It should be interesting anyway.
Thanks.
