Food grade silicone lube!

That might be just the ticket.I have yet to have a problem with peanut oil.I have a couple of gals.left out of five.Maybe it will turn rancid and gummy in my lifetime.

I got the food grade silicon lube today. It has a low viscosity, similar to WD-40. It applies easily and quickly.

We are going to do some yard cleanup and pruning tomorrow. I will use an 18” WWII and a village Udhaipur to cut up the branches. I coated them with silicon lube this evening. They were both wiped down with marine Tuf-cloth when I initially got them, although in my experience, that alone is not sufficient to prevent rust spots. I’ll clean them and coat them again when I’m done. It’s damp here as usual. I can keep an eye on them in the sheath for a while, but I suspect that this stuff will work as well as vegetable and mineral oils at preventing rust.

Good to see it got there so quickly Howard.
Now if the other things I mailed out reached thier destination as quickly then all is well and I am caught up,almost.

I really like the way the silicone mkes things slide. My Khukuri's are getting much easier to remove as the olive oil is replaced by the silicone.

Khukuri FAQ

Good Lord have mercy on me, in fact all of us who have to put up with that crazy cherokee! That was SO BAD!!!!!!!!

Uncle Bill,

You made a reference to Cajun cooking, so I thought you might like to know how it's done. I'll send you a Cajun cookbook tomorrow morning. We bayou dwellers do take our cooking, and partying, very seriously!

By the way, I think khuks might be just the thing for skinning alligators.

Steven, I lived a year in Mamou, in the heart of Cajun country. And, spent three years in New Orleans. Although I am a native Kansan I adapted to the Cajun way very easily and quickly.

And, many thanks for the offer of the cookbook. Yangdu has been wanting to try some of the old Cajun recipes but didn't have the "formulas" as she calls them. Now she will have them and I can see some real Cajun food in the future. We can't find boudin or crawdads here in Reno but we will make do.

Yep. That Cherokee needs some meds, Rusty!

Well, it’s been a couple of months. The silicon lube is doing very well. It applies easily, and the knives slip right into and out of their sheaths. There is no gumming or negative effect on the leather that I can see. The knives seem to be well protected. The only drawback I can think of is that the oil is in a hexane/propane carrier that isn't very tasty, but the carrier evaporates off fairly quickly.

How has it been working for you, Yvsa?

Howard or Yvsa, what's the brand name on that lube?

Merry Christmas and Happy (and safe, hopefully) New Year to all the forumites.

No crawdads? Drive up to Tahoe and catch your own. Leastways Tahoe had 'em in the mid '60s when I was stalking the wilds of Trout Creek.

I'll have to try the food grade silicon.

I'd never use peanut or olive oil on my khukuri. They taste great and all, but I might forget myself and lick the blade ...

Remember the kami who checked the steel by tasting it? I wonder if we had peanut oil on the blade if he'd have thought the blade was made of peanuts!

I generally get more crazy during the holiday season -- just so you'll understand.

Khukuri FAQ

OMRie,

The name is Sprayon 210 Food Grade Silicon Lube. Sprayon is a division of Sherman Williams.

:
Howard I have been getting the same results with mine.I like the way it makes the scabbards feel slicker. The silicone is gradually making all of them much less sticky.
The olive oil I was using was making the khukuris very hard to withdraw sometimes.

I am out of the regular all purpose silicone and since it has gotten a little colder here the rubber on the car doors was trying to freeze to the metal and pulling the rubber seals out of the doors.I used the little tube that came with the cans and sprayed all the rubber weatherstriping on them.No more problems!!!
Barb bought an extra can when we got yours to send to you.I am pleased to hear that it is holding up to the northwest's humidity.I imagine the khukuris are easier to take care of with something you can jst spray on.

Khukuri FAQ

Thanks for the tip Yvsa. My doors are starting to stick to. A product called "Automotive Goop" is great for reattatching the sealant. By the way I used a khukuri to open the adhesive container.
