Food "just in case"?

Even though not life threatening, you can get distracted, irritable and sometimes unmotivated if you're stomach is grumbling. Anybody with kids knows:p:D
Absolutely. Just having one kid bonk on the trail can spoil the whole day for everyone, so I always pack something (maybe just an extra powerbar) to feed anyone who starts grumbling or dropping off the pace of the group or whatever. I've found a couple blocks of semi-sweet baker's chocolate are great, as they pack a good dose of calories in a tasty little block and they aren't as easily melted as candy chocolate.

I almost always have a large Hersheys bar, 2 tins of Breisling Sardines in olive oil, peanut butter snack crackers and tea and coffee packets in my steel cup.

Often a small salami and hard cheese and a hunk of bread for day trippin'

Must be the hobbit in me:)

what do you use to heat up water for your tea and coffe???

I carry some tuna and a few cliff bars in my "go bag" (the pack that I take to work every day). I might be able to survive without food, but I sure feel a lot better when my blook sugar is bottoming out. I don't function well on an empty stomach.

I carry a couple of snickers (no Cliff bars in the UK) and some hot chocolate with sugar and powdered baby milk already mixed through, I also carry a plastic jar of peanut butter. Doesn't sound like much but there's enough calories in that lot to do me for about 3 days.

I think most of us carry a water bottle cup combo as standard kit. Even if I just had a plastic cup or bottle I could heat the water using hot rocks and make my hot chocolate that way.

am i being ignored here with my question :D :D :D???

Maybe everyone is just making a mini fire to boil water.

As for the original question, I find that I generally bring too much food when I do extended trips. For day hikes though, I'll usually bring lunch, and then a bunch of snack bars and tea bags.

I do think the "survive weeks without food" is funny.

Survive sure.

Live and function?

After 2 days without food I was pretty damn dizzy. Last thing I would want is to be alone, in the dark and cold trying to get off a mountain. No thanks. Albeit, there most likely would be something you could munch on. For whatever reason, it may not be convenient to do so.

It's good to have back-up, Mine is a bag of rice with some spices and beef bullion, and a small container of peanut butter. Something hot, something high in cal and quick. It's easy, cheap and small to pack.

In my Get Home Bag that I carry every day, I keep 2 MREs and water. Shorter trips, I might reduce it.

often i will add another bag with some kind of fat for the bannock (saaaay margarine? for example)

Margarine will go rancid - olive oil will probably last longer.

As mentioned you need to rotate the stock of food to make sure it is OK. Any vegetable oil/fat will go rancid and needs to be rotated faster than dried foods, canned food is good for years, etc. Just be aware of storage life and make sure you rotate everything often enough.

sorry about that... things are getting busy over here. i just make a small safe fire. i'm not in an area where ppl will notice me, or things of the sort. it's been pretty wet here too so that's not a worry.
99% of the time, i just make a small task specific fire, just to heat up a mug of water. it's a great way to force myself to stop putting miles under me too. i tend to just want to bullrush the whole country, i rarely stop, and just chug along. i often go too long even without water for that reason, it's a problem i am trying to work on haha.

I always carry extra food, I might be a bit chubby, but I like to stay that way.

I carry pilot bread crackers, sausage, and peanut butter crackers. Hiking burns a ton of calories.

Right now in my backpack i have some beef jerky and trail mix.
In my small waist pack i have trail mix and some chocolate.

I like the foil packs of Tuna and salmon as well as my own trail mix. I like to have a few days of food stord in my BOB.

Same here, plus some jerky. Stores very well, lightweight, high in protein and calories, and just plain yummy!

Nope, just read it:)

Very often I have an Esbit stove full of tabs and a small lighter.
A few times I just made a small three rock stand and used twigs or small bits of driftwood.

I really like the stainless steel cups we bought that fit the bottom of our lexan containers.

More than once I've just let the sachets of coffee or tea sit in the water for ten minutes and drank it cold.

Whatever works:thumbup:

:D
