I just got back from Sams and thought I'd post this while it was on my mind. How's YOUR food storage looking?

I watch the price of rice and the price of a 50 lb bag is down at the lowest i've seen it in a yr. I was almost 24.00 at one point during the past year and now it's 15.59. So go get yourself some rice for your food storage!

I have a bit of food stored, enough for a month or 2. Haven't really took it as far as to find out how long I could live with it.

I've found that the best place to store food is in my belly.:)

We've got enought for about 6 months, including two 55 gal. water drums.

Got about 50 lbs of rice, vacuum bagged and in 5 gal. buckets away from "critters". Another 40 lbs of pinto beans for complete nutrition.

As our Boy Scout motto said, "Be prepared" ~;-)

we've been talking about canning. someone, and i won't mention any names, hasn't figured out gardening in texas so we have no veggies to can. we've been talking about canning soups and such but there's been a debate about getting a pressure cooker or not.

That is a good price. Nice find, and even great to report it Mrs shotgunner. I do 99% of the cooking for my place while I am stateside, and as such I have had the opportunity to experiment a little. I found our 3 year old little girl will eat ALMOST anything. But she loves Rice, Beans, Chicken, and "hot stuffs" as she calls it, plus the typical things any kids like, hot dogs, mac and cheese. We go thru ALOT of rice, about 7.5C dry rice a week. Just between the 3 of us. I keep atleast 200 lbs of rice on hand at any one time. About 3-4 years ago the prepper bug bit me pretty hard. And I started stocking up... more at sales or when I see something marked wrong... yesterday at walmart they had the 96 oz "great value... walmart brand" apple juice marked WAY wrong at $0.90, yes 90 CENTS. I bought 22 of them. I had some WEIRD looks and will probally show up on peopleofwalmart.com, but the 64 oz was and usually goes for 2.64.

The cost of that rice, is just as great. Figure $5.00 for a bucket, and if you want to store it longterm.. a few dollars more for mylar and O2 absorber. For those of you wanting to get started and do not wish to hassle with sealing your own grains, there are numerous online vendors that provide this service and the last few year it was cheaper to buy from them. Remember the great rice shortage about 2-3 years back. beprepared had PAILS of rice sealed and even had it on sale. I started buying out buying from them then learned how to do it myself. But for convince its there. http://beprepared.com/quickshoplist.asp_Q_c_E_79_A_name_E_Superpails being local I do not need to pay shipping and can just swing by anytime, and usually do. I also found that local asian markets ALWAYS has large quantities of bulk rice.

If one is just getting started in food storage there are numerous online resources available for free, Alan Hagan has a great guide. Other resources can be found online. Some of the bests ones I have read are... Making the best of basics, No such thing as doomsday, The encyclopedia of country living.

I now have different types of foods (staples, MREs/ MH, canned/ prepared goods, etc) stored in a few locations including work. Just one of those securities to have available.

spool- you sound like me! i just bought 10 things of laundry detergent, 15 bottles of shampoo and handsoap.

:eek:did you know you can can butter!!!!!http://www.endtimesreport.com/canning_butter.html i'm soooo doing this! we've also decided to get a pressure cooker (thanks jeff :D) and this winter we're doing soups, chilis, ect. AND i had a total epiphany today! if we had had a pressure cooker and canning jars when the hurricane hit i could have cooked up all the meats in my freezer and used them in food storage! dammit! lol i for sure wouldn't have had to give that soulless B*tch across the street the brisket. :grumpy:

ETA: ohhh I forgot! we bought a case of MRE's today. $80 for 12 meals and they're the ones w/ the heaters in them! SWEET! we're gonna buy 1 a month so long as they have them.

We do a lot of canning. Put up about 300 jars this year and that's on top of the leftover stock we have. Working on using up 2007 food now. So, basically we are a year ahead. I like my canned food MUCH better than store bought. A lot better taste. We put up several varieties of beans, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, etc.

We just bought a pressure canner this year for the first time. Used the boiling method for canned tomatoes primarily in the past. The pressure canning allows you to step up the diversity of foods you can including meats, soups and other veggies. It also cuts the cooking time dramatically compared to the boiling method. My wife found a good bargain and bought two pressure canners (that use the weighted valves) for $100. With the two canners we can do 16 jars per batch. I think the pressure canners are well worth it. Nice thing about the weighted valve types is that there is nothing to go wrong.

i'm hoping to try my hand at pemmican this deer season. never done it before, but i've gotta learn some time.
