You know how that saying goes. One time it's on you, the second time, I'm an idiot. For the second time in three months, I had to have grinding dust taken out of my eye by a doctor. I wore my goggles 90% of the time tonight, but that "one more thing" got me. Wear your eye protection, or at least have an eye doctor on speed dial.

Eye protection and respirator. You can make a knife with prosthetic hands but it is really hard to make one without your sight and impossible if your are not with us anymore.

It sucks big time.
I hate to say it, but I have had metal removed out of my eye twice as well. But both times I was wearing eye protection. A full face shield plus my glasses. I'll catch some flak for it, but I no longer wear anything but my normal glasses. For some reason I think the face sheild actually funneled everything right behind my glasses, therefore putting it into my eyes.

Has anyone tried the full-face respirator/face shield units from 3M and the like? I'd imagine they would get a bit "sticky" in the summer and fog up in colder weather, but it would pretty much remove the possibility of getting something in your eyes/lungs. If they're so uncomfortable you'll be tempted not to wear them, of course, they're actually a much worse solution...

Marilyn and I both use the full face 3M units. They don't fog up and they breathe easily. Way more comfortable than a dust mask and safety glasses.

Rob!

If they fog up or get too hot, then the air flow is too low. Low air flow usually means that your battery needs to be charged.

im old school--cig in the mouth, no eye protection, no respirator, hell i grind my fingernails to shape, on my grinder. I grind G-10 on my grinder with no protection, yall are wimps. --ANOTHER STUPID POST- yall i write stupid stuff usually when im jacked up on coffee., but some things shouldnt even be joked about--like SAFETY. SAFETY IS ALWAYS YOUR #1 PRIORITY!!!!. thats why im not even gonna post something as stupid as this--thanks marekz--DAD-do you look like darth vader with your positive pressure mask????

I believe that. I had a piece of hot slag I chipped off doing a vertical weld bounce off the top of my welding hood, find it's way inside, find an area between my safety glasses and burn the corner of my eye. If my chief and several officer hadn't been there when it happened there would have been no way I could have convinced them I had all my safety gear on. Now I just use comfortable safety glasses and only use a shield if I can't find any other way to grind it without sparks coming at my face.

Thank you very much for posting this. I did not know this was a danger. Would your goggles have been enough to protect you for that last 10%? Do I just use regular shop goggles like for wood working? Like this:

I see several suggestions on here.

( looked at the sticky the only thing on safety was about UV light and this product http://www.centaurforge.com/prodinfo.asp?number=3517 don't know if that applies to coal forges or not)

Saw several things on google about safety goggles, but some of you mentioned a respirator. Can it get in the lungs like wood dust?

I had an MRI a few weeks ago, and two of the screening questions they asked were if I ever had metal fragments in my eye or been a machinist, carpenter, or worked with a grinder. The implications are frightening.

Just a followup... doc says my eye will be OK. Profiled 6 more blades tonight, with glasses and a N95 mask. No gunk in the eyes, and the boogers are still yellow. That's what I'm talking about :)

Do you have a link to glasses like you have?

I use a 3m FFM from the time I enter the shop to the time I leave it. I forget I'm wearing it half the time. shop isnt heated and I dont have any fogging
just remember to wipe it out after sweating in it or it can become quite smelly and unpleasant to wear :barf:
