For all you smatchet lovers

good price and size, but the steel on that one is 1055, which is subpar imho

...would like 80crv2 or 1075 like ontario has switched to on their machetes & sp line

That seems odd. That special edition is six times the cost of the N690 one. What could possibly be the driver of a difference that big?

Here's another item from Cold Steel (our favorite company); it's not called a smatchet but is truer in size and design to the original.

I have it's little brother , the Shanghai Shadow : https://www.knifecenter.com/item/CS...dow-fixed-carbon-steel-blade-secure-ex-sheath

Not too bad a cheap fighting / SD knife but I dinged-up the edges pretty bad trying to use it for a throwing knife . The edges are too thin for that .

That's funny, my dictionary's entry for smatchet just says "awesome implement of awesome awesomeness" and doesn't mention the also awesome portmanteau origin at all.

Apparently it's also a Scottish term for "a small unpleasant person," which tracks pretty well for the knife, too. ;)

Ok...who did it?

It actually looks functional. With a 2K price tag and damascus steel, it will be hanging on someone's wall or in someone's safe. Definitely not chopping on something in the woods...

I bet it could take a 45/70 @ 75 yards :p

I like the idea of a smatchet, but I don't have one. I know I don't need or would ever use one, but want one. Should I get one? Talk me into or out of buying one.

If I do decide, get one, then I will come back and ask about the steel, grind, etc.

I was curious, so I did a bit of poking around. Apparently it's a portmanteau of "smashing" and "hatchet."

I'd never thought this forum was home of such cunning linguists, with tongues as sharp as their blades =)
