So, for those watching the BK style rendering thread, I had Dubz do me up a mockup of my mini-dao design using the Becker handles. I liked the way it looked, so I got started on that today, in between grinding on a BK6 blank for another forumite.

First things first, I sketch it out on the steel. I'm using 5160, which only comes in 1/4" thick stock. Here's what it looks like at that stage, next to the aforementioned BK6 blank, for size reference.

Here's my own design, also in 5160, next to the Becker Bush Sword design.

Next I cut it out with an angle grinder, and then use my grinder to clean up the profile. Then, I use my angle grinder and a thicker wheel to cut in the fullers. After that, I start the initial bevels. I didn't take any pictures of that process, because I pretty much just get into it. Then I drill the holes for the handles, and since I'm making a Becker-styled design, I just used the stock handle scales for the pattern. Here's what it looks like so far:

More to come...

Like it so far, minus the choil. It looks a little wierd where the blade all of a sudden gets narrower than the handle. Can't wait to see the finale.

I figured some of you would hate the choil. But, I like it. So it got put in. Need to clean up the back profile a bit more. I don't like the curve with the straight line of the fuller. It's a little more front heavy than I want still, but that should change after it gets heat treated and I finish taking the grind down.

Pretty bad ass ...I do agree with others though and have to say that the choil isn't really my thing. How'd you grind the fuller? Oh and by the way, that 6 ever gonna be ground? Would be cool to see what you come up with...

Haha, missed that part only read the part where falcon use dthe grinder to cut out the original shape.

Angle grinders are marvelous things.

I knew a lot of you weren't going to like the choil, but it helped lower the balance a bit more to where I wanted it to be. It's still a little more front heavy than I'd like though. I think it will come down another half inch when it's ground to final length though. I'm now out of 5160, so I may just send the pair off to Peters. It looks like it might be a while before I can get the rest of the 3V I want to grind, and I'm not sure how well the 24" mini-dao's will sell. My impatience competes with my desire to save on shipping...

-edit-

If I can find someone more trustworthy than Clayton (Guyon or one of the other mods, perhaps), I'd be happy to send this to the gathering for you fellas to play with, if there's enough interest. Really, I think this design deserves thinner stock, but Aldo only sells 5160 in 1/4". I'd prefer this in 3/16" though. But it's likely to be a pretty decent chopper, especially if it were Fisked.

This one's back from HT, by the way. I'll be finishing it up in a few weeks, and would like to do a short passaround so I can get some feedback. Anyone interested?

I'd be willing to give it a swing or 3.
if you really want to go with thinner stock, give O1 a shot -- I bet this thing would scream if it were made in 5/32" stock.
