For Emergencies: Which Stove? Which Fuel?

Alcohol stoves dont burn worth a crap in winter when you need them the most.

SVEA 123 is a good stove.

Optimus Nova is a great stove, durable and burns anything flamable a real asset when TSHTF.

The trangia stoves work just fine in winter conditions as long as you get them up out of the snow. there are more efficient stoves for winter but not to many that will fit in a coat pocket. For a day in the woods hunting A Trangia will do just fine

RogerC thats sound like a great deal. Im going to check one out in the area as i like to put my hands on one. But if i like it i just might get it too. I just found a pic of my stove.

When you do get it would you mind letting us know how you like it. Most important how well build is it... I dont like flimsy stoves. Just like with Skammer i dont want it to fail on me when i realy need it. The hunter i got is not the latest and the greatest but its 110% fool proof.

IMO, alcohol stoves work but per volume of fuel, white gas and kerosene both have more BTU's than alcohol. Outside in the winter I'd want something that burns hot and something like an Optimus 111 (kerosene) or 111B (white gas) would provide a lot more BTU's than an alcohol stove.

Really, there's lots of stoves to choose from. Pick a fuel and find a stove that burns it.

Ras i must disagree not all stoves are made equal. Some are better then others. Or to say it some work under most conditions and some fail more then not. My stove my not burn the hottest but it always works never failed it simmers and it boils. I were looking for something as a second stove just cause last time i missplaced my stove and took me over a month to find it again.

earlier in this thread, CitizenQ raised the issue . I have several gals. of Coleman white gas in the garage. Anyone know what the reasonable life of this fuel? 2med

I'm using a jet boil, pocket rocket, and I have about 50 canisters I bought all at once. For long term stuff, I'll throw the pan on the wood stove.

has anyone tried the Vargo Ti xe alcohole/fuel tab stove,it also looks like it might be a good wood burner as long it doesnt get to hot.

Define better ;) Never said they are all equal, but before we can really recommend a stove, PM needs to decide whether to use Propane/IsoPro, White Gas, regular gas or kerosene. Does he want it to boil and simmer, or is just boil good enough?

There are lots of good stoves that burn those fuels. I could go into the garage and put together a sampler pack of stoves including good propane and multi-fuel models. There's an 8R, 111B/T/C's and a couple Svea 123's out there. I've even got an 8R clone that burns white gas and regular unleaded. I've used all of the above, but now I'm packing an MSR Pocket Rocket (small, clean, hot) and have an MSR Dragonfly standing by. The others are in boxes, all are good stoves. Some individuals prefer one or the other for various reasons; I like 'em all.

I bought 5 or 6 gal. cans of coleman fuel getting ready for Y2K when all the computers were supposed to crash i'am using up the last 1/2 gallon now in my coleman stove. so i would say if stored properly it will last at least seven years.:)

i've used this plus woods and charchoal as fuels. works pretty good for something i bought for 10 bux

Ras you sure got some realy good stoves there. A friend gave me his old stove optimus 96 love the workmanship, they were build to last a life time and work. Some of the best deals you get on a stove is Svea123 on ebay for about $20. But you are right PM does need to figure out what fuel and what hes plans are for the stove. The choices are out there
