Do yourself the biggest favor you'll ever do yourself (if you haven't):

1) Go out and buy DOOM III for $20.
2) Install.
3) Forget the fact that there is a new game there, just think of it as a new engine for:
4) Download the Classic DOOM: DOOM III mod.
5) Extract to the DOOM III folder.
6) Install all of the patches/updates for Doom III
7) Launch the game.
8) Select "Mods" at the main menu, launch the mod.
9) Kill infected/possessed scientists/marines.
10) Kill demons.

For those who didn't catch on by the name, some extremely generous people put together incredible maps that are almost exact replicas of the first episodes (Knee Deep in the Dead). It even has some cutscenes that are pretty well done. Most importantly, this will be an incredible opportunity to play more realistic (in terns of both map designs and graphics- you'll see what I mean) versions of your favorite levels. Without playing the actual DOOM III game, this update on its own is worth the 20 clams. Along with the great graphics, cutscenes, classic weapons (they even re-ordered them in the same way they used to be, wheras DOOM III on its own has a couple of add-ins and a messed up line-up), and much more intelligent AI baddies, this game also features some great sounding recreations of the original songs for each level. The first one is done on an electric guitar, and it's really cool to hear while you're exploding some imps.

I absolutely love Doom. It's my favorite game ever. Problem is I don't think this PC can run it, so I have Doom 3 for Xbox instead. Sounds really great though. Right now, I run JDoom with the model mod, so it's pretty nice. I can only imagine how cool what you're running right now is though.

There was some inherent lameness in Doom 3's weapons and enemies that I'd like to see rectified in this new version. Sounds great!

Darn you NeedleRemorse! Darn you!

Even after downloading Doom for win95 and learning iddqd idkfa you have to come up with a "New" game......:D

BTW doomwin95 is a free download and gives a great "feel" for the game

Some of the stuff produced by the "mod" community is simply amazing. I remember back when I started gaming with Combat Flight Simulator. The game gave you something like eight flyable aircraft.
By the time the game became passe', I had something like 127 aircraft, dozens of missions and utilities, and a whole world of scenery to fly around in.

Some mods go on to become successful commercial games in thier own right, such as Red Orchestra, A German/Soviet WWII shooter, and GTR, a sports-car racing mod for EA's Formula One series.

I'm currently playing Forgotten Hope, a "realism" mod for Battlefield 1942. The lads are hard at work adapting this fine game for the Battlefield 2 engine.

I downloaded the Doom III demo months ago.

I got about 5 frames per second with everything turned down or off.

I'll pass, thank you.

You need to update your computer then :D Try getting a new video card. It worked for getting Battlefront II to work on my computer.

I used to run mods on Half Life. Day of Defeat was my favorite, followed by some vampire/slayer mod. I think I have Doom3.

I must try this.

Hey, while we're on the subject of old videogames, does anyone know where I might download a copy of Jetfighter II?? That was the one where you're shooting down migs off the coast of california. Came on a floppy disk. Really fun and simple filight sim. I'm guessing it came out in 1991.

Thanks in advance.

I'll have to try this after I get done with Serious Sam. I'd played the first one a couple years ago and loved it, so I picked it and #2 up on eBay for ~$5. If you like FPS, then you really, REALLY need to try Serious Sam. I'm working on #2 now having conquered #1 (except for the final monster). My 8 year old son played 1 at the same time on the easiest level and made it all the way to the end without any help from me. He's going to restart and try the level 2 difficulty now.
I'd got SS because I'd just finished Doom3 and was looking for something new/old to play.
Thanks NR!

Serious Sam is loads of fun. It's a fairly standard FPS, but it has a goofy sense of humor that gives it a boost. I would like to see that team of designers do something else.

Update on my Serious Sam playing... I don't have 1 and 2... I have both parts of number 1! The CD's I got were the gold edition, which is the first one and the Second Encounter. Now I need to pick up number 2.

I went back and finally defeated the boss monster on the 1st edition. Whew... that was a PITA! The Second Encounter was one of the BEST FPS I've ever played. The bosses were tough, but do-able. The hard areas were damn hard, but still do-able. The new weapons (Sniper Rifle and Flamethrower) are Excellent and are perfect for certain situations. Add in the humer and the comments that "Sam" makes as he travels the game. The levels are huge and the bad guys as (extremely) numerous. Now I'm downloaded the player created maps for the 1st edition and trying them. After I get all of those played, I'm planning on doing the Doom thing that NR started this thread about.
