For fun: Buck 301 vs Case Trapper

In a way, i wonder, would my choices be clearer if my family were knife carriers?

again, just rambling, sometimes writing these things down helps organize my thoughts, input is always great if you want to chime in, but i am not asking someone to pick a knife for me lol.

Of course your choice would be clearer if you had family or other strong influence. We are a great deal of what we grew up with. The environment, and the people who were the adults in our lives had an enormous impact on who we become.

My dad giving me a scout knife for my 12th birthday was a huge influence. That knife became my Excalliber. Especially after our time with Mr Van, watching him with his old Remington scout knife. Then going in the army and they were handing out demo knives at the supply room like lollypops at the bank. My first overseas duty station was Germany, and there everyone was carrying SAK's. By the time Buck came out with the 110, I was used to a four blade knife that was a small pocket size package. I looked at the Buck, and thought who the hell designed a knife that weighted as much as a small boat anchor with only one skinny blade? Nuts! I never bit on the Buck knife because I was so used to the scout pattern. But when they had a Buck display at the PX, and I saw the three blade stockman, I thought of Granddad's old there blade German made Hen and Rooster, and how much milage granddad got out of those three blades. So I bought a stockman. Would I ever have bought a stockman if I had nobody in my family that I had admired use one? Heck no. I would have stayed with my scout pattern SAK/demo knife.

Only being a knife knut was the wild card for me. I'd see some knife, buy it, try it out, and if it worked okay, if not, I'd get rid of it. Tried sodbusters, jacks, and even a Balisong. None of them lasted. I always ended going back to the scout and stockman. Had a few lock blades, just never cared for having one blade in a heavy package. Of course, nobody in my family carried a lock blade. I never would have tried a peanut if it were not for my dad. Only after he was gone, and his ld knife was sitting on top of my dresser, that I dropped it in my pocket one morning, I'm still not real sure why.

Since nobody in my family carried a trapper, congress, or other knife, those patterns were kind of like an alien species to me. I never had any experience with them, so I never had an interest to try one. I admit to being a creature totally of my environment growing up. Except for my choice of firearms though.

I own two large trappers (Case and a Buck 314) and three mini-trappers (Case Amber bone and yellow Delrin, plus a Buck 312). I also own a bunch of stockman knives from Case, Buck and the old Schrade. I've never really bonded with carrying either a large trapper or a large stockman. I've felt more comfortable with medium-sized knives for actual carry. Regarding the trappers, IMO the Case trappers seem more solid than the Bucks (I've never owned the old Camillus-made Buck 311, though).

Lately, I've been using and occasionally carrying one or the other of my Case mini-trappers. Both are in SS. I have knives in straight carbon, but I prefer stainless, and haven't found it much harder to sharpen than carbon.

The biggest obstacle for me to carrying a stockman OR a trapper on an everyday basis are my SAKs. I wear cargos, but I only have so many pockets. :) But the mini-trapper is about the same size as a standard SAK, which is a strength, IMO. If I were going into the outdoors, I would choose the large stockman. Not sure whether I'd choose a Case or Buck 301 for that, as I'm sure they're both equally tough and able. If I thought I might get it messy, then probably the Buck. But for EDC, a large stockman is a bit much for my pocket.

I would choose the Trapper, I am definetly a fan of the Trapper. My Grandad carried a Buck 307 and he gave me a Case 3318 so I really grew up with the Stockman but once I held my first Trapper something just clicked. Two long useful blades in a nice looking comfortable handle.
I prefer Cases cv to Bucks stainless and I really don't like Bucks saber or hollow ground blades on the 300 series. I would be a lot more interested in them if they moved back to flat ground blades.

Just the opposite I grew up with 303 and 301's. I tried a trapper once but it just wasn't right some how, now it's just a drawer queen. I do wish Buck would go back to the flat ground blades.

I have a 301 and a 303 and think they are great. I also have a full size Case trapper with brown Delrin handles. I really love the clip blade on the trapper so much better than the 301. The trapper is a lot more blade for the size knife and I find trappers a visually appealing pattern as well. However if I had to buy them over again I would choose the 301 first for versatility. A sheepsfoot blade is hard to beat

I wonder if i would just fall in love with the "improved" trapper
long wharncliffe and long clip blade. Especially if its the slightly smaller 3 7/8" size

that being said an improved improved trapper, ie long clip, long sheepsfoot would be ideal

I like both the Trapper and the Stockman, but it's no contest. The Stockman with it's large size and THREE excellent blades is just awfully hard to beat. I love the Sheepfoot and use it for nearly all misc cutting tasks. The main Clip is my food cutter/dinner knife - slicing bread, cutting my steak or pork chop, etc. the spey opens mail, scrapes this or that, etc.

These two are my #1's... The Case is my hard-use worker when performing some rough chore. The 81 is my 24/7 companion for everything else.

PS: Sorry, forgot the topic was ref the 301 v Trapper... Well the same theory applies I believe :)

lol yeah, YOUR stockman offers some of that pocket jewelry aspect of the trapper in my scenario. Although the versatility angle remains the same, ease of maintenance still falls with the 301 for its delrin handles and stainless blades.

but yours just might be a good compromise. there is something to be said stockman utility combined with the pretty scales.

But i do prefer bucks stainless to case's (seems to retain an edge longer and burr less). I am wondering if a great compromise might be one of the new 301s or 303s with the new rosewood scales *ponders*
