I was wondering what exactly are the laws regarding firearms in Ireland mainly but also in England & Scotland?

I'm not so much concerned about handguns (which from what I hear are not allowed anyways) but I am wondering more about shotguns or rifles.

Cheers

In a nutshell, as you said, handguns are banned as are auto rifles and shotguns. Pumps are legal but only up to 3 shot capacity.
I believe you can still own black powder handguns.
There is still a big field sports industry here, bolt rifles and double shotguns the standard. Also, auto rifles converted to manual repeaters are a thing. You can get quite a rate of fire going with these puppies.
This is for the U.K. don't know about Ireland.
Hope this helps.

So a side-by-side DB shotgun would be acceptable in the U.K.. Is there a barrel length minimum requirement (I'm fine with the metric system) for said shotguns?

Although not mentioned I presume from other things listed that a lever-action rifle would be ok (particularly one in .45 cal) and are there any round restrictions on something like that?

Firearm laws vary between England/Wales and Scotland.

The Republic of Ireland has entirely different laws but they are likely strict on handguns/auto weapons due to the 'Troubles' in Ulster. Hunting rifles and shotguns will probably be viewed differently.

In England&Wales the laws are pretty well what has been stated with strict licensing and storage of guns. There are minimum barrel lengths for shotguns but I can't remember the details. Scotland has a different legal system but her laws are very similar, there was even some talk of banning air-guns in Scotland recently....

Minimum barrel length for shotguns is 24". I believe lever actions are legal but not 100% sure.

Reading this and the posts from the Aussie chat on the 22 thread, I'm stunned at the freedoms you have surrendered.

Are you bringing your rifles with you?
What are you planning on shooting?

I don't have any firearms as of yet.
The Misses and I are strongly considering emigrating to Ireland, and we would love to get a "farm" in a more out of the way area.
So, I figure with an out of the way area and lots of animals (ours) it might be a good idea to have something.
I was thinking about a side by side shotgun (probably in 12g) or a lever-action rifle in .45 colt; both having some versitility to them.
