Kevin, I think you're a great guy :D

I am pretty sure that if I spend too many more posts asking how some beliefs can can be reconciled with metallurgy, there shortly will be some who beg to differ with you ;)

They would be wrong  :D
Not only do you make awesome blades yourself but through your efforts on this and other forums dozens of us other guys have improved our quality of work.
Thank you.

Matt, I took an x-ray crystallography course as an undergraduate - the course was a graduate physics course ! Well anyway for practical use we can for example see exactly what happens when we temper steel. The martensite crystal is an elongated cube with carbon atoms stuffed into the edge of the crystal . As we temper at higher and higher temperatures ,more of the carbon atoms come out of the crystal and the length of the crystal gets shorter and shorter , finally becoming a cube ,ferrite, without any carbon
So now I can file away the results and stop wondering exactly what you get from it. I decided engineering was nerdville and I didn't fit in (they were getting a little annoyed with my standard troubleshoot answer anyhow...."hit it with a hammer") so now I'm in construction management and won't be taking those classes anymore :D
This stuff is fairly interesting when it pertains to knives. Your post that I quoted really helps connect a few things for me on HT and tempering. I just can't handle all the theory. I like getting the basic info and applying it to what I'm doing.
