For mammoth ivory fans with a new tusk

I just posted the blue one at the beginning of this thread.
We don't get complete tusks very often. We never cut up a complete tusk into scales because we would never get our money back out of them. The complete tusks are pretty expensive. Hope you like them.

Thanks for sharing.
While I could never cut such a nice piece I am curios.
How many scale would that make? OK, depends on the size, but just a guesstimation?
TIA

There are lots of variables. It's hard to use tusks of this size because the diameter is too small for scales of any size, the radius is too tight.

Inside curves are hard to use because few knife designs can use scales from inside curves. We can use maybe eight inches of the circumference of the tusk, the tusk is seven feet long, we will loose some of it to cracks, so fifteen to twenty sets of smallish scales out of each of these tusks would be about right.

You wouldn't get any scales out of here that would be suitable for hunters or Bowies in the med. large to large size.

Thanks for checking them out, I get some good satisfaction working on these. It occurs to me that it might have been interesting for me to show you how these look when I get them. The following pics are of a tusk fresh from the ground. I was outbid on this one and unable to get it.

Looks like you are new here. Please read the FAQs. Your post with a link to a commercial website is not appropriate. Your apparent attempt to peddle your or someone else's wares here without a paying membership is not appropriate. Hopefully one of the johnny-on-the-spot moderators of this subforum will be along shortly to clean this up.

Splendid example of Mother Nature's beauty - I hope my bones look this good after 50,000 years. :D

Truly amazing when you think about it. What?, 10,000-15,000 years old or older.
Oh, if only they could tell their story.
