For my big chopper... Swamp Rat or Scrap Yard? (Micarta vs. Resiprene C)

If you want a true bush tool that can chop down an oak tree, clear brush, cut through small branches in a single stroke etc...Contact Big Chris Customs and get him to make you one of his hybrid Bolo's! THE best big blade I've ever used.

If you want an indestructible tank of a blade that you can heavily baton with get a Scrap yard 911 or if you can the 1311! Res C is the bomb.

This sucks. I missed the 1311 deadline. I didn't even know they had deadlines on these things. Picking up the 911 just because I want to try a Res C. The bigger 1311 is much more my speed.

A couple of questions:

1:Does anyone have long term use experience with the res c? How does it hold up over long term use? I ask because it seems like it would be more difficult to re-handle than the full tang micarta.

2: How does the SR101 steel compare to 1095? I ask because I am looking hard at Swamprat/Scrapyard as my next purchase. I have no experience with Bussekin, but a lot with Esee. How do they compare?

Thanks.

1.) Res C last forever. I had a dogfather than had 6 years of use under its belt and the handle looked brand new

2.) SR 101 is much better than 1095. Tougher, and holds an edge longer. SR101 will be noticeably better than ESEE's 1095 which is pretty soft and doesn't hold an edge very long.

You say the SR101 is tougher? As in less brittle? And holds an edge longer? That sounds great, although, I have never had a problem with 1095 in the field, seems plenty tough.

Is the SR101 Easy to resharpen in the field?

I am not doubting your word, or wisdom, I just want to be perfectly clear on everything before I shell out a hundred plus bucks on a new blade that does not even come with a sheath.

Sr 101 is more damage resistant than 1095. Because 1095 is not as hard it deforms more easily. If you hit a nail while chopping with 1095 and SR101 in identical blades, the SR 101 blade would have less deformation. Its just a stronger steel all the way around. Its harder and also has better lateral strength. I think SR 101 is easy to sharpen but most of my field knives are M390 or ELMAX and don't require sharpening per se, but more touch ups. Ive never actually sharpened SR 101 in the field but I don't think it would be very difficult with a 1X30 400 grit belt or a ceramic stick. My field sharpening setup is typically just a high grit belt sander belt. Works like a charm.

Also this sounds odd but Busse Kin knives not coming with a sheath is one of my favorite things about them. It allows you to have the freedom to pick the sheath of your choice via a custom maker or making one yourself and keeps costs down.

Ive owned over 100 busse and Kin blades and they are some of the best knives out there regardless of price/ custom or production. Buy one, you won't regret it. I really don't think you will find a tougher or higher performing production fixed blade than a Busse kin. They're they best, plain and simple.

Thanks for the advise. I rarely have to do more than a touch up in the field as well.

I sharpen free hand with Arkansas stones (just always done it that way since my grandfather taught me as a child), do you think that it would be any harder to sharpen SR101 with my stones than say: D2 or S30V?

Once again please excuse my ignorance, I just have no experience with this particular steel.

If you ever damage the handle,or the blade itself.....it's got the Bussekin warranty....they WILL take care of you.
