MIKE SANDERS started making knives in 1965 as a hobby. He’s been a full time Louisiana knife maker since 1985. All knives are personally handcrafted by the artist.
Mike has made many knives over the years for different organizations to sell. He has sold and shipped many different kinds of knives all over the United States and internationally as well. Examples of the knives he makes include, one-of-a-kind Bowies, as well as daggers, miniatures, folders, and fantasy knives.
Of course, the knife that got all of this started was the drop point hunter/skinner that he made to take out west one year. At the time, he and his wife owned Sanders Archery and Outdoor Outfitters in Ponchatoula and he was making knives as a hobby. Many of their customers liked his knife very much, and so many requests started coming in for it, that they almost didn’t make the trip out west to bow hunt that year.
Mike and his wife, Evelyn, have been a team for 42 years. Evelyn, EMS, when not teaching at St Joseph in Ponchatoula, does traditional black line scrim on many of Mike’s knives, when requested. She also scrims pistol grips, pendants, and ear rings for many of their customers.
Mike and Evelyn have bow and gun hunted and fished together for just as many years all over the west, in Mississippi, and Louisiana. Their son, Brandon, was born in 1976, and he joined them on their many excursions. Evelyn would carry him, at six months old, papoose style, in order to bring him up in the hunting tradition of both their families.
