I have read several conflicting descriptions of these knives on various websites, but think it might be a USMC Hospital Corpsman Knife, which was issued by the Marine Corps during World War II. It is a bolo type knife, probably intended for clearing brush and for cutting wood for litters or shelter poles. I can take more photos if anyone is interested.
