I have posted this on the European K.C. but I know it gets fewer hits so I wacked it here too, If there are ex-pats or any one else for that matter with 10 pennys/cents/whatevers please feel free.
I am interested to find out what knives (+ other kit) others in the UK are carrying day to day. I often catch a quick flash of the odd Kubaton or mini Mag, as well as a few Leathermans.
I tend to run with a mini Mag or Princeton Tec blast and then my Wave and/or a SAK (sometimes a lockblade or Mauser). If I go into the hills I may carry a small fixed blade in my day sac. If I camp, then sometimes I pack a folding saw, small Axe or even a Kukri, depending on where I go. What I try to do is stay close...ish to the law and not give the wrong signal to others. :D

Surefire E1e HA and Waved CQC6 are never far from me.

In the hills I may carry some other bits as needed.

Regards,

Ed

Nick,
When in comes to day to day use, my Gerber AR3.00 is always close to hand. Carry general tools as well, torch, SwissTech Microtool and most importantly, bottle opener. If I go out into the boonies, such as we have here, depending on how long I'm going for, I take at minimum my Gerber and my Fallkniven F1. For a longer stay I take a hand axe or machete.
The law is an arse, most rozzers use common sense though, in my experience.

Rob

I carry the following on a daily basis:

Leatherman Super-Tool
Small folding scissors
Photon 3
A couple of glow rings on my keys
Soon to add a Surefire E2e

Orm

I carry a s/s Harpy all the time, have done for six years, and although the blade length is lawful, the lock isn't, but I'd like to think I'm sensible and discreet and I've never had a problem.
At night I sometimes carry a MiniMag, but there's a Photon on my keyring so it's not really neccessary unless I plan on wandering.
In the car there's one of those huge SAK survival kits, a disposable flash camera, in the boot there's an axe and a folding woodsaw, and an ancient rusty kuhkri.
The only time the Harpy stays at home is when I need something really lightweight, like for shorts, and then the little 'Q' comes out for a day. I once walked around all day with a Civvie and was so paranoid I would be found with it, it now stays at home to be waved menacingly at bad guys on the TV.

SAK Camper with blue Photon 2
Either Coldsteel Medium tanto Voyager, or
Sebenza depending whether I am in more town or country
Surefire E2 if I will be out after dark
For time in the country a 6" fixed blade I made may find its way along.
I have recently bought a Gransfors Small Forest axe which is brilliant.
A first aid kit with lots of wound dressings, tape and antiseptic!! :D

Normal carry:

My folders are a BM940 & SAK Mini Champ.

Fixed blade is either a Helle Fjellkniven or a Fallkniven F1 (Normally carried in a bag or sometimes a pocket, never on a belt)

Keyring : SOG Crosscut, Green Glowring.

Assorted torches, my favourite is a Surefire C2 HA with a P61 LA

Everyday a small Seb' clipped to my pocket and a Leatherman micra and Princetec pulsar on my keyring.
Paul.

This seems to be going the way I expected:p ,despite our anally retentive, blanket covering laws, we still carry. As you said Rob I think most older plod are spot on, but lately some younger ones ( something may have changed at Hendon), have been getting out of their prams over multi tools ect. :grumpy:
Cheer guys

Cool thread:)

Day to day at work I carry leatherman wave and Boker MCS or M2 nimravus cub, lighter, lip balm, and keys with a length of paracord chain linked as a key fob.

When not at work I'm usually in the hills and carry;

-Modified F1 or Helle Eggen (on belt with day sack, across chest with large pack)
-swedish army firesteel on length of paracord, in pocket
-lip balm in, pocket
-silva type 4, on pack
-laplader folding saw, in pack
-mini-maglite and spare batteries
-tobaco tin survival kit
-small first aid kit
-lots of para cord;)
-SAK swiss champ
-spyderco doublestuff
-waterbottle and stainless mug
-basha or bivi bag
-Nokia 8310

Never had a problem with the law, not that I see many of em about up here:D

obviousley we have to keep to the 3 inch law here, my EDC is:

* Fallkniven mod P in pouch in my pocket so no one can accuse me of carrying it as a weapon (due to time it takes to get the thing out)I also carry this knife as it has a drop point blade which is one of the least threatening blade designs IMHO, but the main reason I carry it is because its an amazing knife... :D
* Leatherman micra on keyring

Almost always take along

* Leatherman wave (also in pouch in my pocket for the same reason)

and then some or all of the following depending:

* fallkniven A1 packed in bag if im out of town
* blueflame micro torch
* Hurricane matches
* cheap 'n' nasty 3" dive knife in backpack as backup

I dont think its worth taking the risk of carrying over 3" unless theres a need for it and if theres a need for it youre legally allowed to take it along anyway, however I think the 3" law is stupid, my long standing argument is what can you do to someone with a 4" blade that you cant with a 3" blade?

By looking at this discussion I see there is a three-inch limit on blade length, and that a locking blade is illegal. Can anyone please advise on the legality of fixed blades in the UK, and if legal, the allowable length? I am thinking of traveling in the UK soon. Here in the "colonies", each state has its own laws, and I am grateful to live in Texas, which is about the size of France, I believe. Texas has reasonable knife laws, compared to many states. My solution when blades are forbidden is a stout walking stick, and I have a nasty scar across one knee to show justification, in the event anyone inquires as to the necessity of the stick. Thanks!

there is a maximum 3 inch blade length, as far as im aware locking blades arent illegal however fighting blades are illegal, butterfly knives are illegal, fixed blades are illegal

there are exceptions eg if you were working in a forest or hunting you would have reasonable cause to carry a reasonable hunting knife *BUT* it must be removed and packed into a bag when youve stopped doing the activity for which its needed. also you can take fixed blades along with you packed into luggage.

bugger me, ive just been googling and looks like locking blades are illegal.

thats seriousley stupid, any engineer would tell you that a knife without a locking blade is dangerous

Rex, almost any item here in the UK can be deemed illegal, even a walking stick. were you to raise the stick in a threatening manner you could be arrested for carrying an offensive waepon and threatening behaviour.#

I hate this country

there is a maximum of 6 months in prison and a variable fine for being found in possession of an 'illegal' knife in public and a maximum of 2 years in prison for using it in a threatening manner (we all know how open that is to interpretation)

That's right bladefixation leatherman's are illegal, as well as SAK's with locks which is why I started the thread. I think that most LEO's would be cool with both dependant on what you were doing( ).I get fed up with our crappy law's, I mean can you see anyone who own's a £90.00 Leatherman being likely to think of it as a weapon and not a tool. The 3" blade law is also mad, has anyone seen what a modeling knife with a 1/2" blade can do?. A Pal of mine got mugged a few years back....ONE slash left him with 81 stitches.

Nick,

My long standing arguments have gone along that line. My main argument is that its stupid to ban knives in this manner because by definition any criminal intent on stabbing someone isnt going to care about any knife laws or they wouldnt be a criminal in the first place

the second argument is that a chair/ brick is a far more offensive weapon in the hands of most untrained people.

your point above also adds another argument, that a razor blade/ stanley knife is capable of inflicting horrific injuries.

the fact that any sensible copper/ judge could even consider a leatherman an effective weapon is beyond stupid, the blade is short, there isnt even a suggestion of any sort of blade guard, the handle is smooth slippery steel. anyone trying to use it as a weapon would probably either break the blade or end up cutting their own fingers when they slid onto the blade and would deserve it for being stupid enough to try anything like that with something like a leatherman.

its a big bone of contention with me this subject, I cant have an air rifle over 12ft/ lbs yet I can legally own the crossbow I have which is 5 times as powerful as that, I cant carry a small pocket knife yet I could carry an oak staff and wear steel toecap boots (both far more effective weapons). Im deemed too irresponsible to own any sort of firearm by people who dont even know me and who have no right at all to tell me I cant own something like that.

If I were to go and hire a Land Rover or a Transit van and load it with soemthing heavy like sand and drive as fast as possible into a crowded market place I would probably kill more people than I could kill with anything other than a fully automatic firearm

Our police service is pathetic, they seem to think carrying cans of tear gas is an effective deterrent. I cant carry anything at all to defend myself. some maniac can run at me with a 12" carving knife or an illegally obtained pistol there can be a policeman stood next to me and they cant do anything to help me other than spray liquid at them. I feel very unsafe on our streets, I have been to several other countries, some of which we would consider inferior to ourselves, and have never felt unsafe once because there are police walking around and the ones that arent carrying MP5's or pump actin riot guns have sidearms. I know if some maniac runs at me with a carving knife there and I start yelling the guys not gonna have a head in a few minutes time whereas in this country if I start yelling for a start I will be lucky if theres a policeman within a mile of me, even if there were one they would do nothing apart from radio for an armed response unit which would take about 30 mins to arrive. by this time im a pile of mush. PAH.

I cant drive anywhere without fearing for my license as they have so many speed cameras youre almost never out of range of one. One long distance route I frequent of about 150 miles, im honestly not exaggerating when I say they are in the process of installing 8 - 10 new speed cameras along with the at least 8 - 10 already there. I have to pay 74 pence for a litre of fuel. thats more expensive than milk for gods sake and you have to tend an entire dairy herd to get milk, all you do for petrol is stick some oil in a refinery

I would dearly like to try clay pidgeon shooting but I cant get a shotgun license without knowing two professionally qualified people who are willing to vouch for my charachter on a firearms certificate and who have known me for more than 3 years and who arent members of the police force. even then I would have to keep the shotgun in a locked steel cabinet bolted to the floor and at least one wall with the ammunition in a seperate locked steel enclosure.
what a load of bollocks.

My long standing project is to become fluent in German, unfortunately it keeps getting delayed by various other things I have to study (like Cisco :|) but eventually I hope to move to a decent country like Germany or the US or somewhere.

I really hate this country

I carry a two blade penknife everyday. A SAK Huntsman often and a Leatherman Wave when doing odd jobs. I also have an assortment of folders.

Whenever I carry a daysack and have my boots on I have with me a Chris Reeve Project. My other main working tools are GB forest axe and a Blackjack Marauder II (heavy duty hard wood machete), plus a pruning saw.

There are only a few types of knives that are illegal to carry/sell. The law is all over the place. For example sword sticks are not illegal, you just can't take them to public places. However, a British subject is allowed to arm himself if he believes his life is in danger.

So long as your good reason you believe would hold up against three judges scrutiny then don't worry. Judges are reasonable and open minded. Some young Policemen believe that anything over three inches is illegal, wrong. Talk to the duty sergeant and tell him very politely that you are sure of your good reason. Ask him if he has evidance that you don't have a good reason.
Having said all that there is no point in bring attention to youself in the first place.

Wow Bladefixation, I can see that the laws really do get on your tits. I am hopeing to move to Cumbria in the next month or two,to get the family out of London. Also I will get a chance to be in the Hills more.Greenjacket you are spot on, I know two magistrate's who both own and carry multi tools and would laugh at the prospect of someone being put in front of them for carrying one.

yeah the law really gets on my tits as does this country.

i see no reason at all why anyone could have any argument against carrying a sub 4 inch locking knife, I also believe that anyone has as greenjacket pointed out 'reasonable use' for such a knife in every day life without having to give a specific reason. a knife is the most versatile and basic tool man has invented and has almost infinite uses. try slicing a large apple at work with a 3 inch slipjoint then try it again with a 4 inch lockback and my point will be made perfectly.

i also cant see how anyone can say you arent allowed to carry a basic means of defending yourself, surely this is a human right more fundamental than any other? its a natural law almost, animals have teeth and claws, humans gave those up for larger brains and the use of tools and now after weve evolved beyond anything else on the planet we are denied the right to use the tools we evolved for!

I have stopped carrying my mod p as of yesterday, it saddens me to leave it at home but its not worth 6 months in prison especially as i seem to remember hearing the police can stop and search anyone they like now in the street

I do however carry my leatherman wave as I dont believe any policeman in their right mind would bother about that and if they did I can more than easily justify its place as I work in Technical Support and have a need for the screwdrivers and pliers and also the blades as I have to open parcels on occasions. plus I drive most places and the requirements for a blade and screqdrivers etc are obvious in a car.

I love it in cumbria. the countryside here is really nice and we have some great history right up until about 100 yrs ago when it went pear shaped and weve gone downhil to become one of the lower members of the EU with a spineless population who run from anything theyre scared of and wont do anything unless theyre told. we have some of the longest working hours and lowest standards of living in Europe and some of hte stupidest laws and worst politicians in europe.

I find it amusing when americans are fascinated by this country, although I agree we have an amazing history up to abouy 100 years ago I feel we're a pathetic excuse for a 1st world country now. we pal along with America and look up to them, we ally ourselves with the rest of europe to a certain extent too, yet we will not stand up for ourselves and we wont stand for even a hint of nationalism when the people we look up to ie America are one of the most nationalist countries in the 1st world, closely followed by several european coutries.

Summary for the UK : pathetic and hyppocritcal

well thats my 2 cents (its an american forum im allowed americanisms) i think ive moaned enough now, to follow my own advice if you dont like it and cant change it shut up and go somewhere else...
