Here is something I have been working on in my spare time, a two knife set for the camper or woodsman. The large knife has a 5 1/2" blade of 3/16" stock, with an overall length of 10". The smaller has a 2" blade of 3/32" stock, overall of 4 1/2" with 1/8" thick handle slabs. Both have black micarta handles. My grandson came up with the name ABC, for "All Bases Covered."

This is how they are carried.

Hi Stomper

First I want to say that those two knives look absolutely gorgeous as does all the knives you have been kicking out lately. I certainly like your ABC rendition much better than CRKT's who have a similarly named knife but doesn't live of to the standards of yours. I think the difference in blade thickness' between the two complement one another very nicely.

My suggestion for a camper combo though would be that you could get away with more length on both knives. At 5.5" the big knife is still small enough to be used for many cutting chores and I might imagine you may even reach for this one more often than not, even at its less efficient cutting thickness, because the 2.5" handle on the little guy is just a tad too small. The little guy does look like a perfect necker though! I would say give the big guy another 1" on the blade. Give the little guy another 1.5" on the handle and you have perfection! These are just my attempts at constructive critique.

The sheath work is really good looking. I'm not usually into piggy back set-ups but that one looks really great!

Sounds like the next set will be a little different. Thanks for your input.

Great looking set! I to would echo kgd's comments. a 7"ish blade, and a 3" blade with adequate handle would be perfect. Though, for the smaller knife, I might prefer a narrower blade, with a pointier tip. Both tips look strong, but I like a pointy tip for more delicate work.

For me, this paired with a GB SFA or a Silky saw would be just about perfect! (Oh, and a firesteel loop).

I would LOVE to have a passaround of a combo set like this!

Great concept on the piggyback. I agree with the rest to a point, the 5 1/2-inch blade has a 3/16-inch thickness and that alone would help out in chopping. A 6 1/2-inches or more for chopping would be sweet for sure. I think it is a good idea to have your generall purpose camp knife and whittler in one package.

I LOVE the concept but I also like the idea or a little larger blades.....and a firesteel loop.

You need to get a leather sewing machine. You're gonna have holes going all the way through your fingers at the rate you're making knives.

That's right folks. In case you didn't know, ALL his leather sheaths are drilled and sewn by hand.

Looks like the general consensus is longer blade on the big one, and longer handle on the small one. Thanks for all your input.

Thats a great set. I like the idea of a bigger size too. The knives look great though, that small one is Sweet! I like the handle on the camp knife too!

When I go to the bigger size, should I stay with the spearpoint, or go to a clip point? I do know that the next set will be wood handled.

Good question. I seem to prefer a drop point to clip or spear point. I like the strength of the drop point over clip point, and yet the drop point gives a good point for digging, drilling, etc...

What are you thoughts on the width of the smaller knife?

Thanks for putting so much thought into your knives.

The small knife is currently 1", I`m thinking maybe go to around 3/4" - 7/8".
