  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

For the greatest pleasures - is some pain necessary?

If you equate pain as the effort required to accomplish a goal it's a sum total kinda thing. The reward is not just the destination but the sum total including the journey to arrive there. Sometimes the amount of effort is proportional to the reward. Sure, there are road-side destinations that only require one to step foot out of a car/truck...prone to crowds and maybe a zoo-like atmosphere. Then there are those of us that will hike for many hours or hump a canoe/kayak over a distance or into a deep gorge for the privilege of an outdoor experience....and maybe not see any signs of civilization other than that of our own group.
Stay Safe,

I think happiness is relative. People sharing the same experience will have different interpretations. Insert hardship/suffering prior to it, and the outcome will be different. For one, the satisfying experience will be that much better... for another the hardship endured might take away from the payoff.

Its like that with everything. Talfuchre married his bride because in his eyes she was the most beautiful woman in the world. While to others, she may have a face that would make a train take a dirt road.

See..... relative.;)

Rick

I had to quote this because Rick may sober up and delete it.

I heard somewhere long ago that all pleasure is derived from pain.
It has been so in my life.

I don't think I'd like to undergo my international business by boat. I think you have to chose your battles. I mean take bubble bath for example - its there to enjoy. I don't want to heat my bath with tea candles. Oh - and I enjoy a good bubble bath. Don't let my manly manness fool you. Those bubble baths are just sooo relaxing ;)

Then again, building a fire - its always better when its done by bow drill :D

Substitute the word pain, for pleasure, because that's what I really feel when I accomplish a task. Even if it's hiking up a steep trail to get to an observation point (COPD). If I gotta take my time, to make the climb, you can bet that I enjoy it all the more.

Sometimes I choose to take the long way. So yes, but sometimes I take the short way that'll get me faster because I'm really tired.

I don't think all things are relative - I think some things simply cause pain to all humans. Or, better said, cannot create true happiness. Irrationality for instance.

However, many people do seem to enjoy what I consider pain. Take Rick's wife for example. She may find him attractive - while the rest of this his face looks like a box full of smashed butt holes.

i have to say that even at the end of the hardest and most painful hikes and backcountry trips ive done i have never been disappointed any point of what i just went through

With bad knees, carrying around 40 extra lbs, hiking can be painful. That said, I'll take the pain to enjoy the pleasure of a good hike anytime.
You don't get these views if you stand at sea level.
