for as long as I've been throwing (1 year) I've used this formula:Radius=distance
sholder radius/elbow radius
I throw no spin so I dont use my wrist but if you want you can I have tried it and like no spin (personal prefrence) hope this helps someone!

What in the world are you talking about? Radius = distance? What is sholder radius? For that matter, what is elbow radius? I have always been taught that radius is the distance from the center of a circle to the circumference.

If I have to learn all that stuff just to throw a knife, I will stick with my pistol!
Wow. How on earth do you handle ballistics? ;) That's much more complicated than estimating how to throw a knife.

Or, you can look at it this way: you can point a pistol and shoot at a target, hoping you'll hit it. Or you can learn how to immediately estimate a distance, compensate your aiming to technique to allow for wind and distance, and fire with some degree of confidence.

Ditto for throwing a knife. You can chuck it at a target and hope you hit it, or you can investigate how to time the rotations to stick a knife from different throwing positions at different distances, and feel a little more comfortable.

They're about equally as difficult. Of course, the math isn't there to learn how to throw a knife... just to stick it more often.

he(ralph thorn) uses the same throwing style I do one of the most important things when throwing like this is to NOT use your wrist
try taping your wrist
so you can feel when it moves(you want it tight enough so your wrist has a hard time moving but not cutting off your circulation)eventually with practice you won't move your wrist and the knife will shoot straight like an aarow
(remember to watch out for bounce back)
here is a link that could help these are spikes but the principles are the same

do you have his vidio? is it any good? worth the money?

Thanks for the advice, skaterboy.
I have loved throwing pointy things since I was a child but have suffered from a pain in my elbow as I got older (I'm 56 now) when I try to throw more than a few minutes. I will try your suggestion anyway.
As for Ralph's video, I don't have the full version- just the demo that was posted or linked to on this forum a while back. I have watched it many times now and it's amazing to see what he can do. I watch it and think I have to get the full video, then I go out and throw a bit and my elbow aches too much to continue and I get depressed and think what's the point- I'm too messed up to be able to get the most out of it. I wish I'd seen it years ago.
I would fully recommend it, though.

I feel for you I am disabled and have problems with my elbow and wrist but
I assume I will be in the same position as you in about 5-10 years I am 19
so I am trying to get as much throwing in as I can wile I can

I like the do it until you get it method I used, and a bit of help from Gil's book.
and why oh why did you have to make math part of throwing, I was perfectly happy the way it was.
:P
interesting read, actually, I'm just suprised someone is that into throwing.

don't be that suprised there are alot of people like me
my goal is to help people to love throwing as I do if they so chose
any thing I can say or do to help I will

I find your links quite interesting, thanks.
Unfortunately, nothing I try helps in avoiding the elbow pain after about 15 minutes. I should change my forum name to the Gimp.:o

get some "No Pain" capsascion (sp?) put it on your elbow inside and out. when it starts getting to hot to handle ice the crap out of it. Sounds like you have severe tendonitis.

Thanks a lot Aristo,
I am going to try some this weekend.
I looked it up, it's called No Pain Capsaicin lotion.
I have had this since I was in my early 40s (I'm 56 now) and it doesn't bother me much except in two situations- throwing and surfing (when I push off the board to stand up, not when I paddle).
I had an accident when I was 12 that may have some connection. I was trying to get into our back shed which was locked and there was a broken window by the door, so I stood on a paint can on top of a rock and reached in to unlock the door and the paint can slipped causing a 3-inch triangle shard of glass on the window frame to plunge into the back of my elbow as I fell and protrude out the top of my elbow. My mom rushed me to the hospital and they stitched me up but no one looked to see if I had damaged any tendons or muscles at the time and then it healed and I forgot about it until I started getting some pain in my elbow later in life.

damn!
there is also a ointment called blue emu walmart sells, it's like 16 bucks a "jar" but it's got no smell, no heat to it, and it works, call it magic.
I had cancer, stage 4b peripheral t cell lymphoma, it went into my bone marrow, so I have lots of joint/bone pain, and nuromuscular pain as a result. My hands have severe arithitis, which sucks being 25 and having a lot of life left now that I'm cancer free. So I feel your pain my friend.

let me know how the ointments help.

Hi Aristo,
Your story puts my little elbow problem into perspective.
I've read a lot of positive things about your condition and I wish you all the best. My cousin had a Hodgkin lymphoma many years ago and I looked into it back then. He went on to live a long time and eventually passed away from something totally different.
Thanks for the info on blue emu. I will also check that out. I ordered a little bottle of No Pain Capsaicin lotion on the internet and I hope to get it shortly. It only cost around $15 including shipping. I have been reading about it since to learn more.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks again,

Robert
