Actually they did put a lot of thought into th choil I am just not sure I agree with the
answer they came up with. The part where there is the step where it looks like the rubber should be cut away to leave 1 smooth curve instead of the 2 there is ,is like that to completely isolate the hand from the steel on heavy choppping and also to make it safe to as as an entry tool around live wires. I don't mind it on the big knives but it is bloody awful on the smaller Sr77 knives. For a smaller knife the design on the SAR5 is 100 times better.
The choil is so you can choke up on the knife. Again it works much better on a big knife than a 4 inch one where a HUGE percentage of the blade is used up on the choil.
It is not like with a 7+ inch blade you really need that extra inch of edge.
I LOVE the full flat grind. It is so much of an improvement over the sabre especially with steel this thick. I have had a DFCG and have a DFLE where the difference besides the coating is the grind ,and the flat ground DFLE is a MUCH better knife and 4 ounces lighter. It is just as good a chopper but does not have that dead 2/4 feel of the DFCG
in the hand. The DFLE is not the liveliest knife but it is a real hard worker.
I am torn on getting a SOD,LE as a match for the DFLE or maybe just selling my DFLE
and sticking with my flat ground 8 inch bladed Steel Heart.
A DFLE and the SODle would make a great set.
Here is my DFLE and the Rainwalker rig. Wouldn't a SOD.LE with a matching sheath that slipped into the same frog be awesome?
I am not a huge fan of Sr77 but on big knives like these it is a great steel I don't like the little Sr77 Scrapers like the Dumpster Mutt at all though. They are blunt ,don't have or hold a good edge and not enough thought went into them. The SS4 and Muppy are great though.
