for those who keep knife templates?

I use 15n20, I do have a little bit of it ;). But I don’t do many templates any more. Most knives I do now are one offs so I draw them on the computer and print them out on thick card stock. I buy the big sheets of card stock and cut them into strips that are 22” long by 8.5” wide. I then changed the printer preferences to have a custom sized paper that size. Works really slick and you could do this for any size blade.
Hey JT. Are you going to share some of that 15n20? Just kidding. If you so get a batch to sell let me know 360.305.6225 callmestorm@hotmail.com.

I just print out to scale. Cut with scissor then trace outline with permanent marker. If I wanted less effort or more accuracy than that I get waterjet cut.

Usually for the initial figuring out a design I use formica (Frank Niros suggestion) or thin Baltic birch plywood. I figure out how everything goes together with that, and make templates for every part of the knife, not just the blade.
If its a knife I'm doing a few of I'll transfer the pattern to aluminum, brass, or mild steel. If its something I'll do a lot of I'll make a hardened steel pattern that can also be used as a drilling guide.

I've never much liked lexan patterns, even though I've got a pile of it. Mainly due to how it melts while grinding.

I use cad printed shape glued to something that we call "sololit". It is about 3mm thin, very easy to be cut with bandsaw or jigsaw and refined on any type of grinder. And I think it is like i4Marc wrote "Masonite hardboard", it may be HDF board in that thickness.

Funny your bring this up, I just unloaded 1000-2000lbs into the shop last night. The wife has gotten ahold of the plasma cutter and taken up claim of the plasma area . You can tell becaus that area is kept spotless and organised while everywhere else looks like well everyone else’s shops ;). So we will have steel offered more consistently. She can’t handle the big sheets so I will do those but she has been cutting up the .072 thick stuff. I will send you an email

I draw up the knife I want, grind it adjusting the size and shape until I'm happy. Then ill trace that steel blank back onto paper. Once I have the paper template the way I want I scan it and save it on my computer so I can print it off again for the next knife.

What program do you use to draw your templates? I found one on line but it is cumbersome and slow.
