Ok, Well first post in this area. Well I am an avid back country nut. Worked as a guide for several years and am now into the bushcrafting/ carry as little as possible and live off/with the land. (not a hippy and no I don't hug trees and love my guns LoL) Well I like many other people have bad vision and have to wear glasses or contacts. Well This is my only weak point. Dump me out most anywhere and I should be ok. But dump me without glasses and well it would be a bad situation. I carry a package of contacts and a backup set of glasses but I like to Be a good eagle scout and "Be prepared" for anything. As most people know items usually always have more than one use. You just have to be willing to stop and think about all the ways an item can be applied to the given need. Well I had an old digital camera that didn't work anymore. As some know you can start a fire with a AA battery and the wires in it. Also there is usually a magnet around the lens area which can help with making a compass. Well I decided to check out the lens on my little camera so apart it went. After breaking it apart there are the two lenses of use. Both have to be held at a certain distance from the eye... about 6 inches for me. This will vary with your prescription. but this will correct your vision at a distance and just might get me or anyone else using it out of a bad back country situation alive.

Im sure there or lots of other useful items in this pile.

Here is a photo of the two lenses. A metal pin to magnetize for compass use. the magnet is on one of the lenses, and two wires for fire starting with the AA battery.

Wow. Good idea. I am near sighted so up close isn't a problem but I'd like to see the grizzly in time to avoid it rather than just get a good look at what's about to eat me! Thanks. Gets you to looking at all the other "stuff" to see what can be McGyvered.

Spare glasses are just one of the things a survivalist will have to deal with. If you know your prescription, you can get a usable pair of glasses on the internet for as little as $10, so there's no real excuse. A lot easier than grinding your own lenses, which is possible, but a serious pain in the neck for the average survivalist.

When the 'Big One' comes, I'm going to an eye glass store and get those neat test frames with the drop-in rotating lenses... Now THAT is a fashion statement for the 'New Era!' :p

I do wear contacts normally, and have a spare pair in my bag when I go out, but I'm not horribly worried should something happened because I'm only a -1.75, so while I may not be able to identify the large furry blob running at me, I know that there is a large furry blob running at me. I'm hoping that my vision doesn't get any worse though, as then I might start to worry about being out and not having any vision correction. I would go for the lasik but I tolerate contacts so well that I don't see any reason to take the risks that go along with the surgery.

Should you get in a bind, make a circle with your index finger, like OK, but smaller. Put it up to your eye ~ this should change your focal point improving your vision on what you are focusing. Like I said, good to use if you get in a bind.

I have very weak eyesight&eye disease, so I carry a pair of contacts on my person at all times. If my glasses go, I've had it so that's why. Wonder if all this gaping at computers these days is helping.......
