I found this book on a Google search for transition metal carbide structure: Tools Steel by George Adam Roberts, George Krauss and Robert L. Kennedy.

You can see it here:

I've wondered how the alloylng Carbide formers fit in with the Austenite/Martensite structure and formation. Like how the elements partition into carbides, what effect the extra elements have on the Eutectoid of tool steels.

I learned more in the last couple of hours than I have in a while.

Wow, excellent book. How am I going to afford that?! I'll just pick as much off this screen as I can bear I guess, and hope the tooth fairy decides to be good to me some day. I added it to my Amazon wishlist at least. ;) Thanks for the heads up!

Steve are you a PKD fan? I've read him since I was a kid - that guy was very trippy and very special.

Steve, Sorry to get off-topic, but, what temp do you stress relieve your A2 at?
- Thanks

The earlier edition is superior, this is only an abridgement.

It is indeed some excellent information. I don't have a copy yet, but you can be sure that its on my wish list now.
It may very well end up on my recommendation for knifemakers along with a bandsaw drill press and belt sander.
Its just too bad that all of our knifemaking brothers can't seem to embrace such valuable information.
It is as essential as the other tools I mentioned above.

Mine is the third edition , 1962, well used for all those years. Over 700 pages ,certainly not 'abridged' !!
A good stress relieve is 1000-1200 F for any steel.

I put in Google library and favorites, so I can access it until I get the $ to spare to buy one.
