after all, the IS a forum. The remarks won't make or break the knife and they're entertaining. These days, most of the knives we're seeing on Bladeforums will never be used for much of anything. There aren't many, if any, folks out on the African plains or the Alaskan tundra or out on fishing boats, or anywhere else, carrying 9" damascus blade bowies with 4 1/4" fossil ivory handles. These are works of art and best serve their purpose in display cases. Or, they serve their purpose when the owner sells the knife and pockets a little $$. That's all cool. Most of the knives carried in the places I mentioned are cheap, factory knives, bought for less than $50 and replaced on a pretty regular basis when they break or are lost. Handles are glued back together and then taped and broken blades are re-ground on bench grinders to a usable shape and then sharpened. In most cases, Hartsfields are for the person who wants an extreme high performance, full custom knife with an organic flavor to it, that can be used hard. As far as the "spirit" of the blade, that manifests itself to me by knowing that the blade was made by an "old school" pioneer of the industry who knows what he's doing, is concerned about performance above all else and who cares about my satifaction. For cutting ability and edge holding, I haven't found anything to beat it. Touching up the edge is easy, by running a stone freehand along the edge. Actual regrinding of the edge, if ever needed, can be done by Phill. Find a design you like, or draw one and have Phill make it and then use the knife and get to know it and THEN you'll know what custom knives are all about.
