For You Hartsfield Fans

The first Hartsfields I ever saw where Joe's. I got hooked right away. He had me take one of his kwaikens and held up a piece of paper and I proceeded to do a cut through it. I must tell you it was the sharpest piece of metal I had ever experienced. It was like cutting through air with little or no drag. This may be an odd design from Phill but to be the first Force III he made makes it quite an honor for Joe to have in his collection. We all have different taste in the kinds of knives we like but that's what makes the world go round. The important thing is that we all have one thing in common good or bad is that we all love knives and that's why we come together on this site to look at the pictures and voice our opinions.
Have a great weekend!

Phill can really grind a blade. And, yes, his knives perform and they are SHARP!

AV8R---Fantastic!! I love Phill's Blades. I'll try to post mine soon. Thanks!

This is a serious "machine". Both this knife and the bowie are double-ground (as opposed to chisel).

Capital M! I have an Aikuchi with the double grind. It's a nice one, if I may say. Thanks! Anymore? ;)

Sweet collection. I would love to have a Hartsfield katana or wakizashi. That is my grail want list.

after all, the IS a forum. The remarks won't make or break the knife and they're entertaining. These days, most of the knives we're seeing on Bladeforums will never be used for much of anything. There aren't many, if any, folks out on the African plains or the Alaskan tundra or out on fishing boats, or anywhere else, carrying 9" damascus blade bowies with 4 1/4" fossil ivory handles. These are works of art and best serve their purpose in display cases. Or, they serve their purpose when the owner sells the knife and pockets a little $$. That's all cool. Most of the knives carried in the places I mentioned are cheap, factory knives, bought for less than $50 and replaced on a pretty regular basis when they break or are lost. Handles are glued back together and then taped and broken blades are re-ground on bench grinders to a usable shape and then sharpened. In most cases, Hartsfields are for the person who wants an extreme high performance, full custom knife with an organic flavor to it, that can be used hard. As far as the "spirit" of the blade, that manifests itself to me by knowing that the blade was made by an "old school" pioneer of the industry who knows what he's doing, is concerned about performance above all else and who cares about my satifaction. For cutting ability and edge holding, I haven't found anything to beat it. Touching up the edge is easy, by running a stone freehand along the edge. Actual regrinding of the edge, if ever needed, can be done by Phill. Find a design you like, or draw one and have Phill make it and then use the knife and get to know it and THEN you'll know what custom knives are all about.

Pete I love both of them I have seen the Khan's before but what does Phill call the bowie and does it have a sharpened clip. Thanks for posting. As for the snide comments who cares a forum is a forum. I carried one of phill's blades in africa many years ago and have always loved the man and his work .

I'm not coming in here being snide, I'm genuinely curious.

So the swords are A2 right? How in the world is he getting a hamon on A2? Or is that where the "untrue" remark came from?

I know that some confusion, jealousy, disagreement, etc... comes up due to the amount of finish work (or lack thereof) and the prices. While I don't totally understand the pricing myself, I also feel a bit of the 'ol, "more power to him" attitude.

I gotta agree with Nick, more power to him!.. If all knifemakers could finish a medium size A2 chisel ground knife with a 60 grit belt, throw a packawood handle on it and get 8 -$900, we would ALL be doing it.... I mean thats not bad scratch for half a days work.;) :D

Thanks, Gentlemen. I just can't think of a Thread that brings more rout than a Hartsfield Thread. "Where there is much light, there are many shadows."
Anyone like to buy a Moon/Sun Katana? :)
