Forced to post here... out of desperation

A fair few months ago my Formite Military in CPM440V tip squared off (read broke) when using it to cut/lever through plastic ties inside a computer, the damage is a couple of mm at worst.

However at the time, Sal confirmed it aught not to have done this. My other Military has been through far far more and is still needle sharp.

Secondly I am returning (at last) my Starmate as the lock folds with frightening ease. I have asked this question of Warrenty and been flat ignored.

Can I please please please pay the difference and have the Starmate replaced with an S30V Military? I have lost all faith in this knife.

Secondly can I pay the difference and get the Formite blae replaced with an S30V model? I am happy to let Spyderco bin the CPM440V blade and PAY IN FULL for the new S30V blade.

I hope someone will read this and take pity on a Spyderholic

:p ;) :p

Just to clarify, I have no problem with CPM 440V, but my Formite model just did not perform as I expected it to. I am deeply concerned that CPM 440V is such a difficult steel to work that inconsistancies are to be expected. I am not knocking this steel as it has given me stirling service in my other Spyderco blades. Just this particular pair of knives...

Hi General. Sorry for your frustration.

"Secondly I am returning (at last) my Starmate as the lock folds with frightening ease. I have asked this question of Warrenty and been flat ignored".

We'll need the piece back here to asses the propblems.

"Can I please please please pay the difference and have the Starmate replaced with an S30V Military? I have lost all faith in this knife".

A possibility once we see the pieces.

"Secondly can I pay the difference and get the Formite blae replaced with an S30V model? I am happy to let Spyderco bin the CPM440V blade and PAY IN FULL for the new S30V blade".

There were a number of changes made to the engineering on the model that may make such a change impossible. We would have to have that piece here as well just to see if it's possible.

I hope someone will read this and take pity on a Spyderholic

We can take pity, but we still will need the pieces to go further.

Very fair comments Sal. I will get the two blades sent away on Wendsday.

Just to confirm the tip damage is very slight on the Formite Military, but it is the ease with which it squared off that worried me.

Thanks again and I am sorry I had to post here.

This is the note I will enclose>

Enclosed are my Military and Starmate. I conversed will Mr Glesser on 12th May about the problems I have been having over some time with both knives. To re-state.

The Military tip was damaged using the knife to cut plastic cable ties inside a computer case. I work in the computer industry you see. I accept the the damage is very slight to the point (no pun intended!) where it is barely noticable and would no doubt sharpen out with a dozen or so re-sharpenings. This is not my problem at all. Rather that as this is the ‘Military’ knife and supposed to be reasonably tough (Sal himself confirmed a few months ago that this knife aught not to have been damaged so easily in such a manner) I was very surprised it happened this way. I also own a second Military and have done for a couple of years. This knife has had serious use including the above tasks and far far worse. Truth be told some of the tasks have asked the other knife to perform bordered on abuse (with the other Military NOT the enclosed model). The tip has never ever had a single problem or ever done anything remotely like this.

I have subsequently sharpened the knife probably three or four times so the squared off tip is not as bad as it once was. I suspect the knife may require a test to see if the blade steel is perhaps a little weak? Anyhow, is it possible to swap the blade for an S30V model and pay the difference if applicable? If not, well at least you can tell me if this knife is within normal accepted tolerances? If so, I humbly appologise for wasting your time with this matter.

The Starmate on the other hand is a far more serious problem. I first noticed the problem when I was using the Starmate in my kitchen, I accidently caught the back of the blade on an item in the kitchen. To my horror the blade folded right away. Luckily as the impact was so gentle the knife did not close on my fingers. Subsequent tests slapping the spine into my open palm confirmed the poor lock up.

I really have lost all faith in this knife and request changing it entirely for a different model at your discretion of course!

(address etc left out here of course!)

Not the right address.

This isn't the warranty or repair forum. Nor is it the get something for nothing forum either. You're trying a fast one, outside of normal warranty and repair avenues, and you're doing it in public to try for some extra pressure. Real class act.

So when I offer to pay for something, thats getting a freebie?

" Secondly I am returning (at last) my Starmate as the lock folds with frightening ease. I have asked this question of Warrenty and been flat ignored."

Oh and for your info SAL asked me at the time to return the Military with the squared tip. I DID NOT WANT TO TROUBLE HIM THEN. My real concern is with the lock failure, the Military is being returned as the Starmate is winging its way anyway... As I made clear, if there is no problem with the Military, and you will note I make it clear it is a SLIGHT problem... Then I am sorry to trouble Spyderco. I don' expect ANY steel to be 100% bomb proof.

I TRIED THE WARRANTY ROAD...

I only understand forwards English, not back to front double Dutch nonsence. I am a man of my word and if I say I am willing to pay for something I MEAN IT. Show me one person who has had dealings with me involving money/trades who thinks I am anything but less than 110% honest and fair.

I have ignored your trolling for a long time brownshoe and you just crossed the line in a freight train. Bog off and find someone else to wind up!

General

Although I can understand your impatience, I suggest you need to give the warranty and repair route a little more time!

I've had packages take two weeks (and more) just to make the postal trip from the USA to Canada (and vice versa).

I'm sure Spyderco will treat you fairly - without the need for daily reminders that you're waiting.

Yes, quite right. But it was only a reminder on Sat and now monday, I know you are right though.

Brownshoe is BANG out of order though.:(

General,

Morning! Have you emailed Mike Hayes in W&R directly? Try dropping him a line at mhayes@spyderco.com. He would be glad to check and see if your package has made it to our door. Another option, we catalog packages that arrive by the senders name and address. Email me your name and the shipping address from which the package was mailed and I can pow-wow with Mike and find where your package is. Last Monday was also a holiday here, there was no mail service so your package is most likely one day behind where it would normally be.

Drop Mike or myself a line with futher info..

Sorry I did not have those e-mails. I have mailed to both now with requested information. Thank you.:)

I hope you did not think I was after any free stuff by my posting on the Forums?;) :D

Maybe your not asking for something for nothing, but you are asking for special treatment. Spyderco's does not operate a custom shop. Their warranty covers manufacturing defects and they do relatively minor repairs for a fee. Still there was no need to air your business on this forum. I've sent things back to spyderco 4 times over the years and e-mail and the phone have all that's been required. Your working your angle General, don't get pissed 'cause you've been called on it.

Hi General. Certainly, if you have a bad knife, we would want to make it right. On the other hand, we would not know about or respond on this forum for a warrantee issue. I don't watch for W&R pieces and Mike doesn't normally watch the forum.

I did check on your knives. Apparently the Military came in on May 27th and was repaired and shipped back on May 28th.

The Starmate did defeat and you were sent a letter giving you a replacement option since the model is no longer made. I did intercept the knife and we're going to check tomorrow to see if one of our knifemakers can repair the Starmate.

Another example of Spyderco (and Sal) living up to their well deserved reputation for excellent customer service!!
