I am looking for a 1/4 inch shank burr or wheel for grinding mild steel that I can mount in my foredom tool please. What material will hold up and be effective for removing this steel. Tomahawk build so I need to move a considerable amount for rough out before the file work starts.

You need a carbide bur, For 1/4" shank you really need to use a die grinder instead of the foredom. The foredom is not designed for that heavy amount of work.

Yep.. and please wear face shield when running cause little chips are gonna fly everywhere.

Good point! I just spoke to a guy who shot a piece of steel into his eye. He is now blind in that eye after 6 surgeries so good must do thanks!

Also, wear a heavy smooth surface leather apron. When a big burr like that slips and grabs a pair of jeans or a cloth apron ... it isn't any fun at all. Even if the jeans aren't ruined, you will have to change them :)

A normal Fordham flex shaft won't hold up to that kind of grinding. Use a die grinder, or a heavy duty professional flex shaft. I have these type tools in 1/4HP and 1/3HP, which will remove steel. They will do serious damage to the user if used carelessly. My favorite for fast removal and steel carving is a carbide 1/4" shaft, 3/4" wide flame burr. Next is a 1/2" carbide ball burr. Cylinder burrs are hard to control and aren't useful for most shaping.

Generally, a small wheel attachment on the 2X72 grinder will do far better. I use 3/4" and 1.5" a lot. Another good shaping tools is a 3"X1/2" coarse cratex wheel on an arbor.

Use Safety gear of course.
Be careful when done regardless. Sometimes carving with burrs, splinters can fly everywhere. Then fall out if your hair, clothing, baseball cap, etc. Can get lodged into your tender bits hours later.
