I was reading a thread on another forum which I found quite interesting.
It was asking if anybody plants seeds etc when out in your local forest etc for consumption at a later date.
One person mentions throwing down a couple of potatoes here and there every so often and says that some of these have took and yielded crops.
I just wondered what your thoughts were on this subject ?

Introducing a foreign species into an ecosystem isn't usually a good idea. Johnny Appleseed aside, there's a lot of instances where they have out-competed local species. I think it's actually illegal on Crown land.

Ministry of Environment said:
Noxious weeds are typically non-native plants that have been introduced to British Columbia without the insect predators and plant pathogens that help keep them in check in their native habitats. For this reason and because of their aggressive growth, these alien plants can be highly destructive, competitive and difficult to control.

The B.C. Weed Control Act imposes a duty on all land occupiers to control designated noxious plants.

If you were cultivating native food plants instead of traditional (European) food crops, you might be better off.

For an interesting read, look up the story of the Cane Toad in Australia. It's a story of biosystem management gone horribly wrong...

Yeah I wasn't thinking so much of introducing Coconut or Banana trees to where I live but I wouldn't think the odd Blueberry bush etc would hurt as they are native to B.C !

If you start sowing blackberries, I will personally come over there and hide all your knives on you !!:D

Another 'cane toad' example is the perch in Elk Lake near Victoria.

EDIT: Here's the provincial list of noxious and nuisance weeds. There are some interesting entries for sure.

I can't even find the time to harvest anything in my own back garden so I doubt I'll ever sow anything in the wilds but I just thought it was an interesting topic and was something I'd never given any thought to before !:D

It wouldn't be good to do that on most state owned land in WI. If the Wardens/Rangers didn't get you for planting it, they'd get you for harvesting it. -Matt-

I haven't planted, but have pruned and weeded around specific plants and trees where I know I may return.

Yeah I wasn't thinking so much of introducing ~ Banana trees to where I live but ~

And I was about to start calling you Pirate Prentice :p .

Not far from my house, right behind where I work, there is over 200 acres that used to be a prison work farm. Its littered with berries, apple trees, wild plum trees, and several nut trees.
