Forever knife

My apologies I participated in the thread drift and never answered the OP’s question.

The problem is, if you really try to use the same knife for everything it will be worn out in about 20 years. So they don’t last forever.

I know because I’ve worn out 2 Buck 110’s. Even so the 110 is my forever knife.

Ed, I respectfully disagree about the “no value” part, especially as it relates to tools (and the subset of knives).

They have use value because they allow you to do things you couldn’t do without them. They sometimes have sentimental value because of who or where they came from, or the memories attached. They have economic value, because if they were lost or destroyed you would spend some time/treasure replacing them.

If they truly had no value, you wouldn’t teach your kids to take care of them (or hide the best ones away from them until they were old enough to treat them right).

Their comparative value to other people/places/things we value, that’s a whole ‘nother discussion. But I’m still disgusted when I loan out my grandfather’s paring chisel to some plumber and he brings it back driven through nails, covered with goop, and cracked the handle. If it had no value to me, I wouldn’t care.

(Theoretical example only, I ain’t stupid. No actual paring chisels were damaged in the making of this analogy.)

While I see your point, and absolutely agree with everything you say.

I also stand by my post.
I guess I was being uncharacteristically philosophical. In the end you can’t take it with you, and nothing you have has value.

Also all these things have very little relative value compared with your health, your family and their health.

Thought the Endura was my forever knife. Then I got a pm2 and was convinced that was my forever knife. Now I have a Shaman and I am absolutely certain this is my forever knife. I wonder what will be next.
I absolutely love my Spydercos (including the ones you mentioned) and if you stick within the Spyderverse I would say the GB 2 with Micarta scales for grip. I think this is probably the greatest $200 folder ever made. Perfect ergonomics, probably the toughest and most secure liner lock out there, PB washers, M4 steel, can be used hard but is still a capable slicer, can be used for self defense (hopefully never needed), super smooth action, even with thick liners for the crazy strong lockup it’s still light weight for its size.

Buuuuuuuuuuut as much as I love my Spydercos, I would sell 2-3 of them for 1 CRK any day of the week!!!!!

It can get worse. Stay away from fixed blades :)

That's true. Perhaps we could say something like: Anything that can be bought with money is just a material possession that can always be bought again eventually if lost, however if you do have it, then take good care of it.

I have a few “forever” knives. They are all good knives, but they are simply tools, it’s the sentimental reasons. My first traditional Case stockman my dad gave to me as a young boy. The Spyderco Chaparral my oldest daughter, who was 16 at the time and used her own money from her job, gave me for Christmas, and the first knife my wife got for me, an ESEE Laser Strike.

I know what you mean. I have an IXL carpenters knife from 1840 or so that has been passed down through five generations in my family. It means a great deal to me.

Yes. I keep hearing about crk. The insanity on my part with that is I'm like wow I can't spend that much on a knife when meanwhile I have at least 1200 dollars in knives that I bought but ended up hardly using. The whole time I could have had a sebenza. The ones that sit are great knives but just don't fit the bill for edc. How I ever thought I could carry a full sized adamas as an edc is beyond me.

I have done my share of drooling over the Gayle Bradley too.

How true. I carried a buck 110 for about 20 years. Still have it. It looks like a filet knife now

FYI. For $10 Buck will replace the blade and give it a spa treatment it will look new. But I understand if you want to keep it as is too.

I have some knives that I like to rotate through EDC, but I also have some that I just enjoy the aesthetic/the materials/the lock design etc. A CRK is on the horizon, but I enjoy picking up gently used ZT and Spyderco for EDC that have no sentimental attachments
