hey hey people, been reading alot while ive been waiting for my steel to arrive and my wood too arrive also and have a few questions that i have comprised. first one is in regards to a forge, ive read a couple of things where people have mentioned a car muffler to help with even heat distribution, but im not sure how a car muffler is used inside a forge to help?, btw im going for a propane forge

Secondly can a temper my blades in a small pie/pizza oven??? the one i found was $5 and it reached neally 500 degrees Fahrenheit or 250 Celsius. Will the be sufficient enough to temper my blades???

Now for my knife question, when i start filing a knife blank, at what angle to i position the file to start creating the knifes profile

Not a car muffler (!) But a muffle. It is basically a piece of black iron pipe that get put in the forge cavity and the knife goes inside of it. It protects the blade from the hot spot created by the flame blasting directly on the blade.

Not making fun of you, but your confusion reminds me of the first time I heard the term neck knife, I had all sorts of gory images in my head about that one untill I realized its a knife carried around your neck!

I'll see if I can find some images and post them up here for you.

well thats why i ask the question lol i give myself this award

tbh it did confuse me, i read alot of post talking about muffler this muffler that so im thinking that someones gone to a car wrecker, got an old car muffler, sliced it down the middle and basically used that to shield the blade from hot spots haha, if i didnt ask its probably something i would of done..... thanks man could use a picture or two

I love that second picture, with the fire demon's face in the muffle! You'll find that a LOT of people use small convection ovens for tempering. I picked one up at a garage sale for $1 and keep forgetting that I have it. I usually remember around the time I put the knife in the oven at home to temper and the wife asks "Why is the oven on?"

I bought a pizza oven for tempering... I put a 12"x12" piece of 1/2" steel on the shelf. Once the oven is at temp, the extra thermal mass of the plate helps keep the oven's temp more stable.
