Forge for wilderness tools

wow.. that is an awesome set up andy..... nice and simple.... grat looking anvil too....

about how tall is that wood round.... i'm on the hunt....:D

there so many tree-trimming companies where i live..... it's just a matter of asking these guys...
i actually used to be a tree-climber for a local arborist, until one day, i fell through a roof....

Mine is 24" high and 24" round. Its hickory, and heavy as hell. The anvil is sitting on constr adhesive, and that cuts the ring almost fully out. Its held down with 4 20 penny nails.

Hey mike,

As I was going through all the posts I missed while I was banished to never-never land, I saw that you hurt your back. How's it doing?

Yes, but WHERE did you find that SWEET anvil? I have been looking for one for some other projects, and have had no luck in locating one.

Yes, I'm gonna use it as a Harpoon..

Heehehehehehehe!!!
Anvil-Poon...

Sorry, had to be done.

You said a mouthfull there bro. After a two year search, and I mean an exhaustive search, I e-mailed a local artist/blacksmith, and he pointed me to a local farrier supply house. Brand new, in stock, no shipping, 10 miles from my work. Went over at lunch and chose from 3 in stock. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

Google farrier supply stores in your area. Its an NC anvil, at 70lbs. The first time I had allowed myself to hit it was yesterday. (Finally done with last sheath. Pics later.)

A few pics of the forge, and anvil situation!

My forge is made from an old roasting pan. My wife hated it anyway. This was its first firing. I heated up the rod of 1/2" 01 and pounded it a few rounds. Its a square bar now. Then my neighbor, policeman, came home from a night shif, so I stopped for the day. Really a lot of fun.

Fiddleback... man, nice set-up!!
That anvil rocks!!

I think I am going to use your forge idea.
Cut a freon or propane tank in half, length wise. Make some metal legs, fabricate the pipe, and cement it in.

I'm gonig to try using a compressed air fitting and needle valve to regulate the air supply. The leaf blower is a heck of a solution!

How much air do you need??

I think I could have gotten away with less air, but this wasn't too much air either, ie, no coals floating away. The hair dryer was certainly not enough air. And the motor blew almost immediately too.

I wish I knew how to weld. Thats one big drawback to my knifemaking. Cutting a propane tank sounds like a perfect size. This one may be a tad small. But it really heated that 01 quickly.

This weekend I'll buid a bench, and fix the forge to it with a more permanent blower.

I'll need my leaf blower this year.
