Forge/Foundry work

When I get my knife forge up and burning I want to try my hand at melting some metal for a learning experience and I have a few questions. What should I be looking for in a simple junkyard crucible? Is there a way I can make some foundry sand at home before I buy any? I wouldn't want to buy the sand and a good crucible only to find out I suck at casting

Don't melt bronze in your blade forge, spilled bronze will cause your steel to go red-short
