Forge holds Temps more steady than I thought it ever would.

We got a pyrometer and high temp K thermocouple in today..Built a heat treating muffle for the gasser..Its a two burner atmospheric gasser..The muffle goes out the back and front of the forge, end closed off with a guide and hole for thermocouple(probe is 10" long iconel). The guide keeps the thermocouple in the center off the muffle walls..Also the thermocouple is never exposed to the gas/reducing enviroment in the forge..Only the heat in the muffle..
Anyway after testing the thermocouple for accuracy (we have incubator thermometers accurate to less than a tenth of a degree) we slowly brought the forge up to temp.
At 2 psi and choked off "x" ammount it will hold anywhere you want in the 1500* range almost rock steady...I let a piece of steel soak for 8 minutes and the temp varied no more than 1* up and down the whole time :D and it didnt vary often at that.. Did that several times. Steel reached non-magnetic right when it was suppose to.
I dont think you can ask much more of a atmospheric forge ;) Im pretty confident in this set-up..
 
Your post is what gave me the idea :thumbup: I just modified it a little bit to suit our gasser. :) I will post a pic of it, Ill take a pic when I go to the shop later and turn everything off..
 
Alright, I've followed both posts and have a question of two.

1. Do you leave the muffle in the forge for good or only when you want to HT a blade? ie is it in there during your normal forging?

2. Were there any problems drilling throught the forge body/Kaowool? How is the thermacouple attached without coming out? Is there some sort of sleeve over it?

This has just caught my eye and am very interested in it. What kind of pyrometers did ya'll use?
