I finely got around to making the front and rear rest/door retention pieces done. nice thing is that i just take off to nuts and the end plug comes out. seams very sturdy. will give it a full fire today. here are the pictures

just ran it throu a 20 min test burn. it took about ten min to get up to temp. then i placed a 3/4" rod in side, it was about 6 inches long. i rested one end on the steel shelf and the other end was inside the forge. it took about 5 min to get it up to a nice hot forging temp from cold, and onley a few more min to get to a hot welding temp. after the forge was up to temp i could allmost close the needle valve all the way off and just have the blower running very slow and it held the temp. the nice thing i noticed is that even with one end of the rod allmost sticking out the end of the forge it reached allmost the same temp as the end that was in the center of the forge. this forge allmost acts like a cast forge as it holds it's heat very well, i mean i did put over 1/4" layer of sanatite on the walls plus about 1/2" bubble alumm on the floor.

JT - Nice job! What is the size of the forge pipe and how did you make your doors, are the cast?

the size of the forge tube is 13" long by 8" in diameter. i have one inch of fiber wool that i coated with the ridgedizer then put just a hair over 1/4" of sanitite over the wool. then i coated everything with the itc-100 the put the floor in that is over 1/2 thick bubble alumin in the center. the doors are 2300 degree fiber board the is 1" thick. i coated the fiber board with sanatite and on the inside i put a coat of itc-100. so far so go, I am very happy with it but if i was to make another one i would use a 10" diameter pipe so i could use 2 layers of 1" fiber wool blanket.

Thanks,
its small but thats all i needed right now. its made to handle damascus forging but i have enough lining material to build a vertical forge so i am going to do that for my welding needs and keep this one clean.

FYI the ITC100 will lose effectiveness over time, just recoat it every 6 months or so and you'll be dandy
(thats what I do with moderate use, roughly 6 hours of forge work every week, YMMV)

Wow, it is really the neatest forge I've seen. Will the burner be forced or Venturi?

I have a irresistible urge to renew my forge, I wonder why :D The vertical for forge welding seems like a good plan. May be I will do that also. Keep us posted, I wish to see it full operational, painted, placed to permanent place ... Real good work ...

i dont know if i am going to paint it as the shell does get quite hot and i'm not sure how hot the high temp paint can get. part of my shell by the burner input is a nice electric blue. which i believe is around 500 degrees. I'm going to be doing some forging to day after work. i have 3 knives i have to get done this month. does any one know how long it takes for the smell from the forge to burn off.

o well it looks like stove paint is rated to 1200 degrees. man i hope my shell does not get that hot. ;)

I used outdoor grill paint on mine. Holds up pretty good, but at the openings and in some hot spots it burns off. But I keep a can of it around and spray It down when I think about it.

wow that think is built like a tank. It makes the one I am building look like a toy! nice job!!

should i paint the end cap that are made from fiber board or just leave them how they are ?

They wont rust, I'd just leave them because the paint will just burn away from that part and any part that the flame can reach. You do have them coated right?

yes i coated them with sanitite, every time i run the forge the end caps give off a smell. is that normal and how long does it last.

JT where are the pics of it running and the pics of your burner all set up too. :) Great looking forge. I just found out that there is a refractory company in town and they even sell some of the board. I may I have to try that, it looks really good. Remember more pics. :)

here are the other pictures you wanted. i will take some more of it tonight when its put to use for real.

I want to add a click igniter to it likt on a gas bbq. but i am struggling with where to place the sparker. I dont want to put in in the forge or it will just melt. so i was thinking in the burner tube. here is a quick drawing of what i was thinking. do you think it would work?
