Can anyone tell me what kind of forge I can get for less than $600? Or is there a belt grinder for around the same price? I've got about $600 to dump into knife making and can't decide what to do. I have a belt grinder now but it's a 1 by 42", need something better. Up until now I have used this grinder and heat treated in my wood stove until the magnet didn't stick etc.. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The NWG is a good option, another is a Coote ( http://www.cootebeltgrinder.com/ ), or you could just buy steel and build your own. I've seen them made out of everything from flat stock, to square tubing. I saw one build out of an exercise bike that looked pretty awesome. As for the forge, Darren Ellis is where I would go to buy one ( http://elliscustomknifeworks.hightemptools.com/forges.html ), they are good people. I built mine from a junk yard 10" pipe and bought all of my refractory from Darren.

I agree with others. Get Coote or build NWG and buy a decent motor from ebay ($50-$80 shipped). Doing it you will probably have about $50-$70 left, which is enough to buy materials from Darren Ellis to build a simple coffee can forge or mini forge.

or check out the grinder in a box thread in the forsale section seems to be a little nicer than the NWG

also check out indian georges web site for a forge plan

good luck

You should be able to do both a NWG and a forge for around the 600 mark, if you are willing to build them yourself.

Thanks for the input guys. I do have access to some motors that my grandfather had. He's got 4 or 5 in the barn that are over 1 hp. Thanks

I agree with the above posts. There is a grinder kit in the "For Sale" forum for less than $400. That , plus a motor, and you will have plenty left over for building a simple 12" forge for a piece of 8" pipe. Darren Ellis has everything you need. There are dozens of forge building tutorials available online. PM me if you need any info. There are several good makers in your area who may be willing to help you with the forge build. Building a forge is really simple.

I'll be building forges this spring. If you want to come down and help me I'll cut the price on yours. You will get a forge and learn how to build one.;);) I am also building a grinder and it will be the door prize at the April Hammer-In.

Man, that's nice of you to offer that. You seem very generous with your time. If I haven't done something before then, I'll definately be interested in that.

I believe the kit is just a frame. You still need to spend a couple hundred on good wheels. . .
