anyone know a cheaper substitute for satanite? want to make a forge for mainly basic heat treating nothing like forge welding in the future. I have little or no budget so the cheaper the better. :D
 
There is no good way to scrimp on the forge lining. You could get some refractory cement from the local industrial supplier that carries boiler supplies and firebrick. It should work ( but may not be any cheaper),but remember - proper insulation is the key to a good forge ( the forge body can be any scrounged metal container,since it only holds the insulation in place). At forge temperatures,the lining will not last long unless it is made from the right materials. Using insuwool and satanite will give you a more durable lining (as well as the health risks of an improper lining).That will save you money in not having to redo the forge in a short while,as well as the amount of fuel you will use.

lukek655, it's your lucky day. I was cleaning the shop last night and came across some Inswool that had gotten wet at one point. I can't sell it, and don't need it for any of my forges at the moment, so send me an email and I'll be happy to send you some for your forge. The only caveat, you pay the shipping.

keep in mind that inswool needs to be lined with a more duable "crust" especially if you are forge welding. the liquid borax will ruin the inswools' refractory value it will also "spall" quicklly without a crust.I personally used a product called rc35 wich is a castable high temp(3500*) cement and only paid 35$ for it at a pottery supply place(used for lineing/mortar pottery kilns)
 
thanks for the tips guys. The body of the forge is an old breathing apparatus bottle from my fire department. Just one of the few perks as a volunteer. Wait till you see the mikarta i made out of the denim and turnout gear!
 
Kant wait to see the mikarta Luke. Good luck I used an old water tank that had a broken glass linner for my forge hull.

my sentiments exactly, it never ceases to amaze me the help that is freely given by the artisans that camp out here on this forum. I frequent a couple of others but this one seems to have more of what I'm looking for.:thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup:
