So I am having someone weld up a forge for me, but we are butting heads over the layout of the fire bricks for the front

I want it like this
option_a.jpg

he wants it like this
option_b.jpg

which is the better layout for the bricks and why, both cover the same are, I am stuck on my layout because I can control the opening size, he thinks his way is is better and wont lose as much heat as I think it will because of the taller opening. We agreed to disagree and let the experts decide so what is it A or B. I am using 3000 dergee soft fire bricks for the front

If you are having someone weld up a forge body, why not go with Option C.

Option C = ceramic wool blanket with a refactory liner coating, like ITC100.

I am guessing this is for the opening of the forge. I use similar to A but my bottom bricks are together and I use half bricks on the next 2 layers. I use this like a door I slide them together when heating my billets and open them to retrieve it. If I have a larger piece in that will stick out I adjust it so I can put my piece in and out with out disturbing the bricks.

I would not use the soft brick it breaks just looking at it and is very expensive. I use a hard brick that is used for fireplaces. Generally 2400º rating I can brick the front and back of my forge with this type of brick for less than the cost of 1 soft brick and they hold up better to flux as well.

With the B set up you are more likely to knock them over or off the forge to the floor, this is just to unstable.

Hope this helps.

This is just for the front of the forge, it is being lined with wool and coated.

There will be rails holding the bricks in place to keep them from falling over
