Forgive me for asking in the knives section but I didn't see another place that would better suit the question.

I'm building a new forge from a propane tank. I want to line it with kaowool or a generic version and pour castable refractory into the bottom until it is just below the openings. Then I will harden the wool and put in a venturing burner and a piece of hard firebrick as a hearth to catch and flux I use.

Here are my questions.
1. Does anybody live in the Detroit area that might know of a good place to buy supplies from?
2. If not what are the best sites to get small quantities of these thing from? At good prices?
Ive seen a few but it seems like the kaowool is only sold by the box...a couple of places sell them in 5sqft sections which is too much.

Any help would be appreciated...

Oh also. If anyone from the Detroit area reads this.....what are some decent reputable scrap yards where I can get some business done at and find steels with verified contents? There used to be one in wayne that actually had their steels in bins that were categorized by type. Right down to exact types I.e. o-1 d-2 etc.

I suppose an arguement could be made that I could just walk around the city for a minute and get all the steel I will ever need from any of the barely standing buildings.

Check your local phone book for Pottery Supplies, alot of these places carry kaowool and refractory.

Also check out "hightemptools.com" they have all you need
Also "waynecoeartistblacksmith.com" Good guy to deal with andhas kaowool and refractory in small amounts

Wow...seriously? Lol....there are more than a few of those places near me....I never even made that connection. I was looking for metalworking without even realizing that its all the same basic stuff for kilns and pottery...Jesus. ill call tomorrow and see if these places carry that stuff or if they are simply a materials and trinket store.

Thanks for making that connection. Hopefully they have what I need at a reasonable price.

Thanks again.hightemptools seems to be a pretty good site with very good prices.....at least from what ive seen so far....the brick and mortar places by me didn't have the inswool or the rigidizer and the other stuff was WAAYYY more than online.

Does anybody else have any good resource you would be willing to share? Publicly or privately?

Hey raptorvan,
I'm in the Detroit area, and I used to go to Rovin(sp) Ceramics in Taylor, they were south of Eureka on Racho Rd. I don't know if they are still in business though. As far as steel goes...I would just order some from Aldo, but you might have some luck with Peerless Steel or perhaps Metal Mart locally, you can get 0-1 from Production Tool (local) also.
