I am looking for recommendations on makers (journeyman smiths?) who make quality forged fighting bowies (light, double-edged, 9-10" blade) at reasonable prices ($300-$400).
Try Al Massey, ABS Journeyman. Specializes in short swords. He gave me quote for 8 inch bowie at $200. At your listed price, he can make you a damascus bowie. http://tor-pw1.netcom.ca/~armjan/Index.html
Or you can try Howard Clark. ABS Mastersmith. He can do a simple looking one for $400. http://www.mvforge.com

I remember seeing an article about a guy whose name I can't quite think of. I think It's Dale something. He ran a place called Eight Dollar Mountain Foundry (something along those lines). The knives I saw looked good, and from what I read, sounded damn solid. He actually CASTS the handles (out of aluminum) right onto the blade. I'm sure someone else can remember a little more. OH, it's in NC, and the knives were all $80-120 I think. I hope I was of some help.
Howard Clark would be a good one if he would do it for that. I do not know his prices.
If you are looking for a JS you can try John Fitch. He is a very good value. Knives perform very well. I tested him for his JS.
His address is wmblade@cyberback.com
