PI forged three of these this fall for my sons and myself to carry and field test on a white tail hunt. Here are the things that I built into this small axe:
Easy to carry at about 2 pounds
Differentially heat treated with an edge of around Rc 59 so it would hold an edge like my knife. The peen softer for use as a hammer.
A thin edge (it's thinner than it looks in the photos) for cutting branches and small trees and thicker in the body for splitting kindling.
A hatchet handle instead of the somewhat round of a tomahawk handle.

Forged from 1 inch square 1080
Hickory handle
Length of the cutting edge: 2 1/2 inches
Measured from the butt to the top of the axe head: 12 3/4 inches
Length of the head: 6 1/2 inches
Leather edge cover, no belt loop

The axes were well used this fall on our hunt with more that satisfactory results and I am starting to get positive feed back from some customers who have been using them in the field.

I bought one very similar from Mr. Drew last week. This will not disappoint! The craftsmanship is spot on for this application. Within the hour that I got it (let my 9 year old son open it...now he thinks it's his) my son had chopped down a 5" cedar in the back yard. I used it to dismantle our Christmas tree with zero effort. Taking it on a white tail hunt this weekend and plan on using it to butcher the big bones. Mr. Drew makes a super good product as far as I can tell!
