Just decided that, no matter what, I'm waking up tomorrow morning to do an integral (forged) finger guard on a 'Bushcrafter Meets Mountain Man Brut de Forge'. Not sure that will be the formal title when complete.

Anyway.... I've been searching, but can't come up with a good discussion on how to do it. All I know is to concentrate the heat where I want it, clamp in a vice and schmack with a crosspien. Any words of wisdom on this out there???

It is a bit more complicated than that. You have to take a localized heat, and then set a dent in the edge by striking on the anvil edge. Then you take another heat, clamp in the post vise, and use a raising hammer ( AKA French Hammer) to move the metal out. This hammer is like a thin faced cross pein. You can grind one from a masons hammer. From there it is a matter of upsetting and shaping.

I just came out of the shop from doing it... I basically did what you just wrote. It came out nice....
