Forged in Fire--new show tonight on the History channel

Instead of the overused and tired time constraint component, the show would be much better if they told the bladesmiths up front how the blades would be used. Kind of like a blade obstacle course. Then let them design and make something to run the course and see who does better. For example, they could have used all the same tests from the show, but tell the guys up front how the blade will be used and let them make something to do that thing better.
Heat treat plus grind in 3 hours? Just dumb.

Watched it with my daughter. It was ok. For me, It was important to show her the craftsmanship which goes into making a custom knife. They aren't knocked out in some factory in China by the thousands and sold at WalMart. But built one at a time by a true craftsman.

It was OK but would be infinitely better get if they got rid of the ridiculous time constraints and gave the smiths sufficient time to execute their designs properly and let them explain what, why and how they are doing what they are doing. Then let the judges judge based on design, artistry, craftsmanship and functionality. I'd have preferred a closer model to Faceoff - a larger group of smiths all given the same task each week with the best blade given the winner's stake and the worst sent home. That would supply all the suspense and drama needed. At the end, let the finalists do whatever they want to impress the judges and win the grand prize.

I gotta agree with ^. I watched the initial episode and will probably watch some more, but I was disappointed in the initial show. Typical "reality" TV. Doing what 45Shooter said would make the show much better. Just my .02.
